I know some people take issue with Helen as a white savior character, but I always took her arc as a white woman who comes face to face with black trauma in a way many white people are afraid to do. She went in skeptical, was forced to believe it and empathize with it once she saw it with her own two eyes, got gaslit by other white people when she tried to share what she knew was real, and in the end made her stand with the people she had come to understand better and paid a price for it. Less white savior and more one individual woman’s journey to seeing things as they are. Yeah, the narrative still centers a white woman, but at least it invites the viewers to go on that journey with her and maybe open a few eyes. I dig Helen.

Mannn, SFX artists always did this blue/gray mix for "corpse makeup" on Qwhitefolk and almost NEVER adjusted the undertones for any actors of color EVER until like last month, I swear. Had ol girl Bernadette looking like the wrongest smurf smh 😂😂

If we’re talking Boogeyman, Candyman is the certified number 1 boogeyman. No competition. The rest are just slashers.

One thing I love about Candyman is the way that it serves as a metanarrative on urban legends. These stories often present an otherized villain: commonly mentally ill, non-white, disabled, etc. who represents something about the anxieties of their time and place. Daniel is Candyman-ified because he is Black, successful, and in an interracial relationship, a threat to the white supremacist norms or his era. Helen is an ambitious woman who doesn't view her work as any less significant than that of the men in her field. Later, when she becomes a suspected baby-killer (the most expedient way to cast an otherwise privileged woman as a monster) it is clear that she is the boogeyman of a liberated woman who has rejected the imperative of maternal gentleness. Neither Daniel nor Helen were actually evil (I agree with the commentary you read that their true souls are at peace). Rather, stigma and fear have created monsters in their shape.

the romance of this film feels very phantom of the opera to me. it's the gothic vibes and also the way daniel and the phantom both have a hypnotic draw for the female protagonist

RIP Tony Todd a truly golden human being. We're losing too many legends. Kevin Conroy, Jason David Frank, James Earl Jones, and now Tony Todd. This is just depressing man.

As a native Chicagoan who was a child when this was released, I was terrified of the Candyman. I would slump down in my seat when we would pass Cabrini-Green on I-90, the Kennedy Expressway, as a kid. Still one of the best horror icons of all time.

I can't believe how young this channel still is. Zane already feels like an old friend and I find these videos highly rewatchable
