I propose we call the very hard to see dangerous asteroids Damocloids.

The most difficult planet to visit in our solar system is mercury because it鈥檚 closest to the sun
so the sun鈥檚 gravity well is a problem. The intense heat & radiation of the sun is also an engineering challenge but the gravity well of the largest effect of gravity in our entire solar system being the sun is most challenging. Fraser has done a good job explaining this in previous episodes.

Wow. We really live in an awesome time: able to spot and react to planet killers, able to stare light years away, and able to put whatever we want off planet. Amazing. My aunt asked why we would waste all this money, and thanks to you, I had all the answers. She is a convert.

JMG asked one of the key scientists on Kepler why don't they just build another one and he replied because Kepler did it's job and gave them exactly what they wanted from it. So now it's time to move on to other things.

"Why didn't we build another Kepler"?
Because we were already planning on launching better telescopes, lol.

We can probably no more easily rebuild a 20 yr old Kepler as we could rebuild Apollo and a Saturn V. If it used commercial parts, those are probably no longer being made, so you'd have to make modifications to accommodate the differences. For parts that are custom, they're have to be remade from scratch, and it would depend on how precise the engineering designs and drawings are compared to what was actually made. Make any changes to a components specs, and you have to revalidate the designs.

I like the Keppler question but I can imagine it would be hard to keep the redesigning minimal.

So, were we able to answer the age old question? What sound does a fox make?

  • @xlynx9 路 13 days ago

I think we should have a production line of "Hubble class" telescopes. Most of the cost would be in the design and testing we are already paying for. Mass manufacturing would bring down the unit cost. Once it becomes routine the cost would be relatively small. We could bolt on new instruments as they become available, and the cost per unit of science would come right down. These should be launched at least once per year, not once per decade.
