  Not even to mention all the ancient cities that didn&apos;t use stone for their buildings and are effectively lost to time. Who knows what kinds of complex wooden structures ancient humans were building!

  Studying why early cities failed is often more revealing than studying the ones that succeeded, since the failures expose what conditions actually had to line up for it to work at all.

  One of my favorite subjects. It always blows my mind to think that someplace like Çatalhöyük, which was abandoned so long ago in the past we can&apos;t really wrap our heads around it, was occupied for longer than Christianity has been a faith or that Aristotle was closer in time to the iPhone than to Göbekli Tepe.

The animals depicted in some of the stonework suggest a very different set of fauna in the region compared to today, suggesting a very different climate.

  I have a pretty fancy Cucuteni-Trypillia museum/museums and collection in my town and the predominant idea about the periodic burnings ( about a life&apos;s worth of years ) is that it was about cleansing. A cleansing of the physical sort, because of degrading organic building materials and pests, and also a spiritual refresh/renewal.
