The genius of this system has nothing to do with engineering or biotechnology. The genius is in finding customers who are willing and able to buy strawberries at $11 per pound.

Great investigation. To me the summary is "no, vertical farming is not viable on its own, but if you turn waste into a resource you can make anything profitable."

IMO, the best thing about Dyson Farms is that it's a private limited company, rather than having publicly traded stocks. The stock market has its place, I'm sure, but there are so, so many awful business decisions taken these days just because management's top priority is pleasing shareholders rather than actually delivering a quality product.

Now build these greenhouses next to Datacenters to capture the heat and steam that those give off and the plants (and shareholders) will be working great.

Massive respect to any channel that does their own research and doesn't just take industry's given numbers at face value.

The term "vertical farm" seems to be used loosely here. Back where I'm from in Leamington, Ontario, Canada there are 100's of acres of greenhouses (and they can't build them fast enough, could be well into the thousands of acres) that stand 25-30 feet tall that vertically grow their plants while utilizing lifts on hot water rails, automated natural ventilation, sophisticated automated packing and incorporating LED grow lights to supplement light to maximize income. These farms produce massive amounts of produce, mostly tomatoes, cucumbers and bell peppers and have been selling them competitively to the US and around Canada for decades. They aren't the most energy green using natural gas as a primary heat source in winter, but when it comes to water and space utilization and maximizing profits they literally print money. It's over a million an acre to build and they can't build them fast enough and the owners, many of which are independent farmers make crazy cash. It is very very rich area... why isn't the rest of the world doing this ??

It's actually pretty respectable seeing Dyson making something like this pushing farming forward while actually making progress unlike those starters who just try to raise their stock value before going bankrupt

I have a single-pole vertical farm in my backyard for growing apples. With this installation, many more fertilizer delivery vehicles flap their wings and deposit nitrogen resources throughout the yard on a daily schedule. My feline affection unit becomes much more kinetic and energized during these gathering events, generating motion and sometimes harvesting little protein gifts for me breakfast. All because of apples grown vertically. Up in the air.

My next design is to experiment with horizontal forms of napping. The potential of this system promises to reduce neck pain and the unplanned velocity transients of collisions that involve the floor. Soon, I hope this may lessen my impact on the world around me.

That's not vertical farming. It's just an expensive greenhouse

Based on the overpricing of their vacuum cleaners and other products, I was surprised the berries were ONLY $11.00/lb. I was initially guessing $50-60/lb.

Farmers in the future won't just be farming plants, they'll be farming electricity too.
