  As a child of 5 years old in Chicago, over 60 years ago, I befriended an older-ish couple who lived two doors down from our home. &nbsp;He kept lovely gardens and she baked mainly for the children on our block. &nbsp;Years later, my Mom explained that they escaped German captivity, but lost parents and two children before they were able to escape. &nbsp;Our mothers, aware of their sad circumstances, consciously allowed them to adopt &nbsp;informal roles as our special grandparents, because they noted that we children brought them joy. &nbsp;We dearly loved them, and we&apos;d pick wild prairie flowers for them, and gave their &quot;weinerdog&quot;, Fritz, pieces of our cookies, pretzels, etc. &nbsp;In the winter, we&apos;d gather with our child-sized shovels and we&apos;d brave the cold to clear snow from their porch and walkways. &nbsp;During Summer and Fall, we&apos;d &apos;entertain&apos; them with our spontaineous songs, dances, and skits (to their evident delight), and they&apos;d award us with claps, laughter, hugs, lemonaide and large chocolate-covered cake-like cookies ... deee-licious! &nbsp;(I&apos;d save half of mine in my paper napkin to take home to share with my mom.) &nbsp;Mom later traded her Greek cookie recipe for her German cookie recipe. &nbsp;My German-American wife has/bakes both recipes on special occasions &nbsp;long after they&apos;ve passed away from us. &nbsp;(Their memories still &nbsp;warm my heart.)

  I sincerely appreciate your reaction to this difficult subject. &nbsp;I have often wondered how the German people feel about the criminals of the last century. &nbsp;Your perspective was illuminating and done with dignity. &nbsp;Thank you for a job well done.

  we had a German exchange student when I was in high school who was ashamed of what had happened. Those of us who had become friends with her were like, &quot;You weren&apos;t even alive then...no one holds you responsible for what happened.&quot;

  My Mum (I&apos;m 70 this year) was a civilian caterer (N.A.A.F.I.) in a (Cat C) Prisoner of War camp in Aldershot, UK. She treated the POWs no differently to the Tommies stationed there. Because they were only paid once a fortnight (the POWs did work in &amp; around the camp) either Tommy or Jerry would wander into the canteen during a &quot;blank week&quot; looking forlornly at the change in their pocket. &quot;Have you any broken chocolate or biscuits please luv ?&quot; &quot;Wait a moment, I&apos;ll have a look in the stockroom.&quot; C-R-U-N-C-H. &quot;Oh look, I&apos;ve found some.&quot; One of the POWs was particularly grateful towards the end of his stay. Although Mum didn&apos;t smoke he&apos;d gone to the trouble of making a cigarette dispenser in the shape of an alpine hut. It was beautifully painted with tiles on the sloping roof, windows, doors &amp; for effect, the trade name of a well known cigarette company (I still have photos of it). Like our own armed forces, those lads just wanted to go home &amp; rebuild their lives. Apart from the few that stayed &amp; married locally that is. That would have been a courageous move for both halves of the couple at the time. But although we mustn&apos;t forget the mistakes of the past, the best healing is living positively in the present. <br><br>Being a veteran myself I&apos;m no cheerleader for war but I&apos;m aware that both Germans &amp; Prussians were amongst Britain&apos;s allies during the Napoleonic Wars. Those lads made a difference in the war against Napoleon. Also, Germany is the land of Beethoven, Goethe &amp; Hildegard von Bingen. Plus so much wonderful architecture &amp; natural beauty. There is so much good in Germany &amp; the Germans.🇬🇧 🇩🇪💕

  I am proud of your coverage, it is difficult to let it go, as a Dutch neighbour my hair stands up when I hear: wir haben est nicht gewusst. My grandma knew, my great-uncles were in the camps(they survived) and my grandmothers uncle was tortured and killed. They knew..and I worry about the younger generations who do not have a link to that time, so thank you for bringing this to them.

  So much appreciation and respect for you and your Ww2 reactions, Chris. &nbsp;Hearing your perspective as a German is fascinating to me, as an American with mostly German ancestry in my blood. &nbsp;I would definitely watch a longer video of you reacting to a documentary…maybe even split the reaction videos into 3 parts for the same documentary?
