The exercise 1 & 3 is what causes the pain at first place. It is indirectly a finkelstein’s test which will surely irritate your tendons.

I am 2 days out from a steroid injection and my pain is worse. I asked for ultra sound guided injection, but that is not what they did so I don't even know if the shot went in the correct place. The Dr would not order PT for me because he said it would irritate the tendons more. The PA told me not to splint, the Dr told me to splint? They told me only one shot and if that doesn't work then surgery. I want to avoid surgery, too many chances of complication. I'm a guitarist, been sidelined for over a year, I want to play professionally again. I don't have much faith these Drs know what they are doing. They even sent me back to my retail job the same day, even though my job is what is causing this.

The stretch mentioned says to do it 3 times per day, but what about the other two exercises? Just once per day or also about three times?

Could you do a video on diet and RSI symptoms?

  • @Avalanche8970 · 3 weeks ago (edited)

Super video -- very clear. Is all this the same thing for an injury to the tendons, not RSI?

While I expect I HAVE inflammation -- mine is not from "overuse." About 3-4 weeks ago I SLAMMED (!!!!!) the exact spot (as it turns out) where the two tendons feed into the thumb. (OMG! OWEE!) However, the pain didn't really set in for a day or two. I began to think perhaps I had chipped the bone, because on certain movements -- that hurt a lot -- I'd feel as if one or the other "longitudinal" (sinews? tendons? bone chips?) were crossing over each other -- as if two softish hoses were being crossed, one over the other.

After two weeks of slowly increasing general pain and random occurrences of (yelp-worthy) extreme pain on certain movements, I sought a wrist and hand doc. He took x-rays: bone uninjured, no other visible pathologies, slight arthritis on one edge of the bottom metacarpal: so De Quervain's. No need for surgery, an offer of a steroid injection (which I refused, as it mainly blocks the pain, which allows me to keep using -- and further damaging! -- my hand).

So, a brace and an anti-inflammatory. I'm a medical minimalist; when he offered some Pharma drug or ibuprofen... I said: "No thanks, I'll use straight aspirin to knock down the inflammation." The brace lets me sleep through the night: YAY, no more moving while asleep and yelping awake with sharp, then burning, pain. However, I'm a leftie, I run a biz and use a computer -- the injury, of course, is to my left thumb! With the brace on, I cannot write, sign, type, do the finicky hand movements required assembling microscopes (part of my biz), nor the broad or grasping movements required by cooking lunch! Part of my desire to JUST DO something is: it's like living with a cattle prod fastened to my wrist: random excruciating pain making me yelp very loudly!

I've been using an Ace-style bandage starting just below my thumbnail wrapped loosely around and round from nail-bottom down (up? {shrug}) 4-5" of my forearm. Partly to keep me aware and cautious, partly for support. I still occasionally do something excruciating, but no pain writing or mousing or typing (not a speed typist). Haven't tried any assembly work yet.

Been thinking I should go back to the doc in another week and get an MRI -- to see what the possible damage was done TO the soft tissues. Part of that is I am SO tired of being crippled (I knocked a glass butter dish off the counter; well, the BRACE knocked it... Shattered the dish, AND it was a full stick of soft butter!).

Do you recommend taping at all in addition to your exercises? I’ve had this for over a year and in both hands. As a professional I can’t stop doing the computer work that irritates it. Ty!

The example video from the first exercise only shows one hand being used, although your instruction calls for the other hand as well. Which is correct?

How many times per day would you recommend to do the exercises?

I did the exercises and I woke up sore. I’ve had this for a month in a half but just barely started doing these exercises. I hurt myself lifting weights. Will this eventually go away? 😢
