for FIFTY years now, there has been a .22lr conversion unit for the AR-15 (in 223). the parts swap takes 20 seconds or less. the unit weighs just 3/4 lb, costs just $200 and it rides nicely in the thigh pocket of your cammies. Just remove it from its plastic case and wrap it and its magazine in 1-2 shop towels. there's 10, 25, 30 rd box mags for it. Groups are 2" at 50m at worst, sometimes much better. the POI< point of impact, is within 2" of the 223 POI at that range. That's plenty of accuracy.

The 60 gr subsonic Aguila subsonic 22 has no sonic crack and it is BB gun quiet when fired thru the 223 silencer, if you hold-shut the 22's bolt. There's no flash at night, and it can brain men, dogs, hogs and deer to 50m, eyeball or temple hits only. Cattle and horses to 20m only The brain lies 3-4" above a line drawn between earhole and eyeball.

you do not HAVE to settle for JUST a .22lr, or JUST a centerfire. A 22 unit for the AR-15 saves you 15c per shot, it'll pay for itself in a couple of weekends at the range. If shtf, you will not last a month if you're out and about in daylight, making noise, or showing a light at night. At night, a silenced, nightsighted, 22 autorifle is not nearly the handicap that it is in daytime.

It's about time someone told the truth about the .22. Thank you. It is not a defensive round. I have always heard the .22 has killed more people than any other round. BS. Show me that statistic instead of repeating something you heard instead os looking at actual facts..

A .22 lr is not an ideal choice for self defense. Make no mistake, a .22lr can take you out of the fight. A gut or chest shot can be extremely painful. Ronald Reagan's lung collapsed after 1 shot to the chest. Nick your intestine, liver or pancreas and you will die a slow painful death. Get hit in the hip, knee, foot, elbow or shoulder and your mobility gets drastically reduced. Hit in the head or neck it doesn't work out well either. Not to mention that several arteries are located in or near the central mass region.
Would I choose a .22lr as 1st choice for self defense? No. But I wouldn't hesitate to use one if I had to.

the 22 wont pierce conealed armor, or a helmet, or car, orr much wood or dirt. it has nothing like the power needed to stop a man in his tracks with 1-2 torso hits. The 223 softpoint WILL stop a man in his tracks, to 200m, froma short barrel, it will humanely take deer or hogs to 150m with chest hits, it will snipe effectively to 1/4 mile, given 69 gr hpbt match ammo, match barrel, scope, anti-cant bubble level, free float tube, bipod, trigger job. 400m is far beyond the ability of the naked eye to determine targets, if khaki clad men stand openly in front of a clay bank and hold STILL. Ditto head on prone, camoed men, at 100m A scope lets you handle such problems.
