In an age when everyone has a pocket dictionary there is no excuse to be confused by words.

Being a reader for these people is an aesthetic rather than expanding their world view or vocabulary

6:12 I noticed a booktok say "skipping the words to read the dialogue" and I had a horrifying moment of realization. These "readers" are throwing away most of the actual meaning so they can chew through superficially entertaining character conversations. No wonder people are actually using AI apps that make up shallow slop fiction on demand. That's how they were already reading. That's already all they were digesting.

As a non-native English speaker I love looking up words I don't know. It improves my vocabulary and I can flex with it to my friends.
