Absolutely incredible. This proves that nature doesn’t need centuries to recover when we understand how to help it heal. One botanist, one bold idea, and 30,000 trees changed everything.

Thanks for mentioning the critiques in a balanced and complete way! It would have been nice to see case studies of Miyawaku forests that were planted decades ago to see how they are once they've matured a little. I've never seen this mentioned in videos on the topic.

This video is very interesting. There are now many examples of wilding or re-wilding appearing around the world. What these demonstrate, and what Miyawaki appears to have believed also, is that plants naturally crowd together, not in rows and not all the same species. I have successfully used companion planting in my allotments and allow these "unproductive" plants to spread and self-seed.

I am not a botanist, but about 5 years ago I had enough. For 30 years I tried to have a nice backyard other than grass. I planted all sorts of trees and shrubs. Nothing survived, one after another died and eventually a small patch of bamboo took over the entire garden. Since this type of bamboo propagates via underground runners and neighbors started complaining about bamboo inside their yard, I had to get rid of it. It is virtually impossible, unless you use a backhoe and dig up the soil at least 1 ft deep.
Just cutting down every bamboo stalk will not do it, they are back next year bigger and stronger.
Then I had an idea, just like this Japanese botanist suggested. I did absolutely nothing and saw that some wild trees (i cannot even name them) stood their ground and crowded out the bamboo. Before, I always cut down these trees because they are not what I wanted. But these trees were native to Texas and ideally suited to grow in this climate.

My garden is now virtually bamboo and weed free. The trees grew at least 5m high and block all the sunlight.
I never thought it is that easy, just let nature do what it wants, but then I do not have any pretty flowers and the neighbors are still complaining, calling my garden disorderly and a habitat for vermin... to be sure, the bamboo is gone, so there could not be any panda bears.
The floor under the trees is just soil and leaves.
