  I'm an American who's in love with this gorgeous marvel of engineering. I'm a lady in my 70s who grew up with steam trains, and my father worked for the railroads from the time he was 17 until the day he retired. One of the perqs of his job was that his family could travel by train to anywhere in the U.S. for free. (Can you imagine such a thing today?) With a stay-at-home mom and 4 kids, we'd never have otherwise seen the country on Dad's paltry salary. To me, there's nothing as sweet as the memory of those wonderful steam trains, the smell of the carriages and the sound of the engine idling in the station. And we had nothing even close to Flying Scotsman. Oh my, what I wouldn't give to have ridden on that beauty!

  It makes me laugh when they keep saying she fought them every step of the way with her restoration. &nbsp;It&apos;s not that she fought them, it&apos;s that she was not going to settle for a second rate restoration. &nbsp;A noble old lady such as herself deserves nothing but the best.

  Hi my name is Phil Holt.i did 50yrs on the footplate at 9b Stockport. On the 19 the of February 1973 fired the flying Scotsmen &nbsp;from Manchester to Darby works Regards.Phil. It looks good &nbsp;now.

  <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fR2kHoPsBHI&amp;t=67">1:07</a> fun fact, that diesel in the background there is actually preserved down here in Australia, it’s still around today,<br><br>The locomotive is now owned by the private group “The Picnic Train” and is now being restored and reactivated to run again and help the group’s two steam locomotives, 2-8-2 NSWGR D59 5917 and 4-6-4 VR R class R766.
