To drive the same loco that your grandfather and father did is something very special indeed. What an experience.

I was lucky to go to the Great Gathering of all 6 A4s at York and Shildon as well as both the 150th and 200th Great Gatherings in Stockton and Derby respectively. My Grandfather was an engine driver so you could say steam is in my blood

I remember seeing SNG sitting in the condemned line at Dalry shed in Edinburgh in the mid sixties. I sneaked onto the engine and sat in the drivers seat and it was a sorry sight so it’s amazing to see the loco back in steam.

My grandad, he was born 1900. Middleton in Teasdale on the family farm. Started on the railways, York, as cleaner, fireman, driver, he worked through the strike in the 1930s, got blacklisted and demoted back to fireman, WW2 had stories to tell about German bombers, mum said as fireman shoveled 5 tons per shift, died in 1948 at 48. Based in York, did the mainline, mum mentioned Grantham and maybe all the way up to Edenborough.

The A4s were the racing cars on rail . Back in the days, the driver and fireman travelling at 100 mph must have been one of the most exciting thrilling jobs. Brilliant video. 👍

We had a specially designed Pacific in Australia - the 38 Class - and my Grandfather, a Salaried passenger driver, was allocated to her and her sister engines on the great trains of the New South Wales Railways - the Southern Aurora, Spirit of Progress and Riverina expresses. What trains they were. Many have been replaced by road coaches now, sadly. Like my Father and Grandfather, I worked for Rail for 33 years and traveled many miles on them in the 70's 80's and 90's. My kids, as youngsters stood on the footplate of the 38 Class leader.

Without watching the video i know that every locomotive can be repaired. It's just a question of will and money.

One of my favourite things about seeing these documentaries is just how people light up when reliving those fond memories with these great old machines! To me that makes it worth some toil and grime to keep them alive.

I saw Sir Nigel Gresley back in September 2018 with nearly no clothes on. This was at the National Railway Museum - York when they were renovating it. Fascinating to watch from the elevated walkway.

After cycling out of passenger duties, these ended up occasionally running the "fish expresses" from Aberdeen using the back roads of the Forfar-Perth lines to stay out the way of the coastal express passenger services. In the late 70's we often camped at one of the old stations on the line and my BR father produced a photo of one such fish express running through at that station (the one after Carrington Viaduct) he had captured himself on his old Box Brownie in his younger years. When the A4's were changed for diesels, it added a third more time to the run from Aberdeen to Bishopsgate and those at Billingsgate always lamented losing those locos as the ice was on the melt by time the fish arrived.

It's about time this was on YouTube. I remember watching this in 2008. Loved it that much I recorded it, then my sister deleted it 😡. So buzzing I could watch it again.
