I fight for the men I've held in my arms, dying on foreign soil.
I fight for their wives and children, who's names I heard whispered in their last breath.
I fight for we few who did come home, only to find our land full of strangers wearing familiar faces.
I fight for my people, impoverished to pay the debts of an empire to weak to rule them, yet brands them criminals for wanting to rule themselves.
I fight, so all the fighting I have already done hasn't been for nothing
I Fight, Because I Must

To be completely honest, I can see both perspectives and logic behind supporting either side (ex. Empire buying time to recover for round 2 "Daenerys style" and free Skyrim possibly forging an alliance with Hammerfell so Thalmor would have to face "multi-headed hydra" instead of single opponent). That combined with the fact, that we still debate about this conflict over a decade later is simply amazing.

small note: when Ulfric reconquers Markarth he is not yet Jarl: his father will die while he is in prison following the events of the Markarth incident

The empire is falling apart, they lost morrowind, they lost hammerfel.
If the empire is going to die might as well Skyrim have it's independence

One thing I want to point out is the sheer logistical nightmare the Thalmor would have to endure to invade Skyrim. They’re already spread thin after the war. They have to get through Cyrodiil or conquer one of the surrounding nations to Skyrim to even have a chance at getting there. There’s no way they could sail an invasion force through the ice fields and sustain that invasion through even a single winter. An independent Skyrim is a nightmare.

Where people go wrong is when they talk about Ulfric as if he’s Caesar from Fallout New Vegas

A fact based and honest take on Ulfric’s character. Rare in online Skyrim civil war discussions.
