the thing that always angered me in my rewatchs is how everyone in the town, including Lorelai, hate Jess, and are very unfair to him, but adore Liz, when she was the number one responsible for Jess' behavior, and considering how fucked up his upbringing was, I would say he turned out pretty fine, he was a troubled and rude kid doing pranks but everyone treated him like he was smuggling drugs in the dark alleys of stars hollow

I actually like that they portray her in this way, it’s far more realistic. There are a lot of bad parents in the world disguising themselves as happy harmless people. The vast majority of harmful parents aren’t walking around berating and physically abusing their kids in front of everyone, they’re just so wrapped up in their own unaddressed trauma that they can’t be present and emotionally engaged with their kids.

Christopher is also a negligent parent and it's widely acceptable and Lorelei takes him back after he gets another woman pregnant. it's WILD

As I work in mental health, Liz’s depiction is consistent with Jess and Luke’s description of her character. She is selfish, impulsive, impetuous, needy, and lacks insight into the destructive consequences of her behavior.
Unfortunately, I have seen the aftermath of such “parenting” many times over the years. It is destructive, devastating, and detrimental to the mental and physical health of the children.
Your analysis is outstanding.

Neglectful parents are often not called out on it. It's very accurate.

I can't lie, I get Luke wanting to stand up for his sister, but the whole "Liz is trying her hardest to turn her life around, and YOU'RE being unreasonable" thing to Jess kinda pissed me off. As if she wasn't the one who neglected her son for 19 years until her billionth relationship.

If you have an abusive parent or family member, this is in line with how people will regard them positively while you see the uglier truth

i noticed right away how aware she was of using weaponized incompetence with luke. jess even clocked luke for that too

I think it's important to mention Luke's responsibility in the situation, he's a enabler, she's his little sister but she's an adult and always bailing her out is not doing anyone any favors

As the child of a Liz, it's realistic as hell. Everyone saw my mom as a bit quirky, but she was fun and she always tried so hard. And I was the problem when I acted out. I wasn't fun and likable, I was angry and difficult, which made it "unpleasant" to be around me.

My mom is like this and I had her coworker tell me today that she's one of those people who goes above and beyond for people... I looked her dead in the eye and said except for me. Because that women couldn't even pick up medicine for me at the pharmacy on her way to the bar.

Jess’ comment about Liz having the reasons why he’s not going to college makes sense in the substance use context. Also Luke’s comment how her previous men drain her bank account. Seems like Liz may have blown through (or never actually made) a college fund for Jess. Being that uni isn’t free or easily accessible in USA. It’s consistent with Rory’s character that she’d be oblivious to this.
