He wasn't called Chopper because he chopped off his ears, he already had that nickname long before that. We're not off to a very good start here.

Chopper Read did not get his nickname from cutting off his ears. He already had the name years earlier, as a kid, long before prison and long before the ear‑slicing incident.
⚔ The real origin of “Chopper”
Multiple independent sources confirm the same thing:

The nickname came from a cartoon bulldog named Chopper in the Hanna‑Barbera show Yakky Doodle.

Read was called “Chopper” in childhood, well before his criminal career.

The ear‑cutting happened later, in Pentridge’s H‑Division, and had nothing to do with the nickname.

Even The Telegraph — which often repeats the myth — ultimately admits the same:
he later confessed the nickname actually came from a childhood cartoon.

His last(?) autobiography had a lot of great dry humour in it. I always remember one chapter where he was talking about as a younger man being asked by a man for directions who was actually a Painter and Docker that kidnapped him and drove him out to the bush to kill him -- where Chopper dryly remarked that, for a bloke who needed a map/directions earlier, he was able to find their way in the brush back to the planned kill site just fine 😂

I met him a few times he seemed like a really nice person. I met socially through people I knew at the time he was well spoken, well behaved and I didn’t pick up any bad vibes from him.

I met him once at a pub in Collingwood.
Id watched Collingwood at Victoria Park back when they still played there but i decided to have a beer and wait for the queue to die down at the train station and have a couple of beers.
Eventually it got quiet and i was waiting for the barmaid and he was right next to me and i just said “how are ya goin” general chit chat and he asked me what i was drinking and bought me one.

I didnt know who he was. When i finished i went up to the bar to return the favour plus buy myself one but he politely, well you know, refused and bought me another one.
I thanked him when id finished and caught the train home.

Didn’t find out who he was until years later but once you’ve heard his laugh you never forget it and yep it was him.
