  I can’t imagine how brutal this battle was in real life. Those friendly fire accidents were horrible.

  One marine fought in the battle of Iwo Jima &amp; he&apos;s underage. Jack Lucas was only 14 when he lied his way into the army. Posted to pearl harbor, he accidentally revealed his real age through a letter and was grounded.<br><br>He secretly boarded a ship for Iwo Jima and during the voyage, was forced to reveal himself for fear of being discovered. Fortunately, the commander in charge of the division let him stay as he was impressed with his courage. Lucas got demoted but was pleased he was given a mild punishment <br><br>When he landed on the island, he fought the Japanese and spotted two grenades, jump on top of one, and buried the other in the volcanic soil. The other grenade failed to explode while the latter didn&apos;t. The blast injured his chest and was evacuated back to the US. He ended up with hundreds of shrapnel still in his body<br><br>Jack was later awarded the medal of honor months after the war ended. He died in 2008 from leukemia

  My grandfather fought on Iwo, so I was definitely excited to see this video come out. But, I had no idea that his battalion would be specifically mentioned, let alone hearing the number of casualties they took that first day is insane to me. No wonder I never heard any of those stories from him.

  Basilone was just something else. Not just from seeing him portrayed in The Pacific, but also just from reasing the records about his actions. That man was truely built different.

  Just imagine a 36 day battle on an island not even 5X2 miles in size. I can&apos;t imagine how they even slept at night

  I am aware the Seabees were uniformed under the USN org. Early in the war the organisation had been made up of civilian units which had then been placed under the umbrella of the USN, and detached to the USMC for Iwo Jima, comprised of skilled and sometimes drafted civilians in uniform. Yes, technically enlisted, and having received varying levels of basic military training. Much like the Royal Fleet Auxiliary in that regard. The use of the word &quot;civilian&quot; here was intended to convey that they were brought together for their technical skills, but were not really &quot;soldiers&quot;/Marines. No offence intended.
