Meade should have more credit for what he did at Gettysburg. He was appointed general of the Army of the Potomac for only one week before the battle of Gettysburg.

Ron, you are a superb researcher. Thanks for bringing this personal exchange between opposing professional Soldiers to our attention. As has been my experience, the outcome of battles often hinges on tactical skill - tempered by luck - as combatants do their best to select the optimal course of action while working with imperfect information. It appears to me that success on both the first and second days of the battle was far from assured for Federal forces.
