  I slept in the woods of Gettysburg for 3 days and 2 nights in June 1965. No ghosts no spirits just the sounds of tree peepers and crickets. The next week I was on my way to the first of two brutal combat tours of duty in Vietnam. My Gettysburg experience was the calm before the storm.

  My Great Great Grandfather was in Pickett’s Charge he had one leg amputated and came back to a home burnt to the ground.  A direct quote from him was we will never get over this until everyone learns how to read and write.  He and his family rebuild their home.  My cousins live in it today.

  When I visited the battlefield, it was shocking to me that Pickett&apos;s charge was across an open field that was not level. &nbsp;The charge was uphill, too, and across a fence line.

  It never occurred to me until mentioned here that Meade&apos;s offensive at Culp&apos;s Hill early that morning threw a wrench into Lee&apos;s plan. &nbsp;I had always just thought it was lack of coordination on the part of the Confederates - something that plagued them during much of the battle.

  My great grandfather was severely wounded July 3 1863 at Gettysburg. He was lucky to have survived. I&apos;m super lucky he survived! Lol

  The confederate soldiers who matched across that open field show extra ordinary bravery, but bravery alone could&apos;nt overcome flawed strategy and devastating firepower. it marks the turning point of Gettysburg, and in many ways , the beginning of the end of the Confedracy. A Sobering reminder that valor without sound planning often leads to sacrifice.
