  As a Hungarian, it’s honestly so funny to see you being amazed by our capital city, but it really warms my heart. 😂 I think if you’d seen the McDonald’s at Nyugati railway station, you would’ve shit yourself. 😂

  England here. That is a beautiful city. I have never left my little island for one reason or another but i promise before i die i will take my walking stick to Budapest.

  I&apos;m originally from the UK, but have lived in Hungary since 2003, way out in the countryside. My wife&apos;s parents were Hungarian, and she wanted to come back home. I absolutely love this country, it&apos;s people, customs, food... everything. This is my home. Out here, we don&apos;t even call the capital &apos;Budapest&apos;, just &apos;Pest&apos; (Pesht). Budapest is one thing, for sure, but if you want to see the real Hungary, you have to get out of Budapest.<br>But you&apos;re quite right - it&apos;s amazing!

  Back in the summer of 1991, I was 17 or 18 years old, and I lived about 400 kilometers from Budapest, in Romania. For some reason, I suddenly got the idea that I wanted to go to Budapest and just live there like a bum for the summer. So that&apos;s exactly what I did. 😂<br><br>I spent the whole summer sleeping wherever I could find a place: in parks, in abandoned buildings, and wherever else I could manage to stay. And honestly, I never had any problems with the authorities or with the people there. Quite the opposite. The people I met were incredibly kind and good-hearted. Budapest itself was already an extraordinarily beautiful city, but the people made the experience even better.<br><br>For most of that summer, I stayed in an abandoned hotel. The building was completely shut down, and the windows had wooden boards nailed over them specifically to keep people like us from getting inside. Well, obviously, we removed some of those boards and found our way in anyway. 😂 That became one of our places to sleep, and I stayed there quite a lot.<br><br>I still remember what happened during the first few days. I was sleeping inside the abandoned hotel on some pieces of cardboard when a group of police officers showed up, maybe four or five of them. They woke me up and asked for my documents. I gave them my passport, and they checked it. My visa was perfectly valid, so I was already thinking, “Well, that&apos;s it. My Budapest adventure lasted two days. They&apos;re going to throw me out.”<br><br>But that&apos;s not what happened at all.<br><br>They simply gave me my passport back and said, “We&apos;re sorry for disturbing you.”<br><br>That&apos;s literally all they said.<br><br>Then they left and let me go back to sleep on my cardboard.<br><br>I remember being absolutely amazed by that. I was a 17- or 18-year-old Romanian kid, sleeping illegally in an abandoned hotel in Budapest, and the police checked my documents, saw that everything was in order, apologized for waking me up, and walked away.<br><br>So when I look back at that summer, I remember Budapest not only as an incredibly beautiful city, but also as a place where I encountered some genuinely kind and decent people. It was one hell of an adventure for a teenager, and it&apos;s a memory I&apos;ve never forgotten.

  I was there, from Ireland, in May. Apart from anything else there is no city in the world which looks so stunning on a night cruise down the river, in this case the Danube

  I visit so many countries in Europe, Budapest parliament is the most ridiculous beautiful building I&apos;ve ever seen.

  I&apos;m a Brit (not a hugely well-travelled one) but I know Hungary better than most places. &nbsp; I&apos;m a teacher of music who was inspired, more years ago than I care to mention, by a way of teaching music through singing that came from Hungary (&apos;Kodály&apos; - named after the composer, linguist, educator Zoltán Kodály...it&apos;s pronounced something like &apos;cod-eye&apos; :)). &nbsp; So I&apos;ve been to Hungary many times to study at the Kodály Institute there. &nbsp; I don&apos;t know Budapest well, but it&apos;s an amazing city. &nbsp; (Btw, in Hungarian &apos;s&apos; is pronounced like our &apos;sh&apos; - so yes, &nbsp;it&apos;s &apos;Budapesht&apos;). &nbsp; The place I know best is a town (where the Institute is) about an hour and a quarter south of Budapest, called Kecskemét. &nbsp; It&apos;s an absolutely beautiful and quite magical place and I&apos;m very sad that I&apos;m never able to go back there :(. &nbsp; Hungary has a long and often troubled history. &nbsp; If you look at an old map (I saw one the other day from the 1400s), Hungary was HUGE. &nbsp; It&apos;s been gradually whittled away :( - it&apos;s landlocked and prone to invasion. &nbsp; There&apos;s a part of Romania called Transylvania (think Count Dracula) which actually used to be part of Hungary, so many people in that region speak Hungarian rather than Romanian. &nbsp; Oh - and Hungarian is NOT the easiest language to learn! &nbsp; It&apos;s neither a Slavic nor a Romance language, but belongs to the Finno-Ugric category. &nbsp; So there are really no words where you can have an educated guess as to what they mean! &nbsp; Also the vowels have different diacritical marks which means each one is pronounced differently - and there are digraphs such as &apos;gy&apos; which is pronounced something like the &apos;dge&apos; in our word &apos;bridge&apos;. &nbsp; &apos;Sz&apos; is pronounced &apos;s&apos;. &nbsp; And so on! &nbsp; But some of the most amazing people I&apos;ve ever met (most of whom have been teachers of mine) have been Hungarian. &nbsp; &nbsp;You might like to check this out - it&apos;s a flash mob performance of Kodály&apos;s &apos;Esti Dal&apos; (pronounced &apos;eshti dol&apos;) - Evening Song. &nbsp; It tells of a Hungarian in a foreign land, weary and lying down to sleep (you can hear the little &apos;gasps&apos; of shorter and shorter breaths near the end). &nbsp; It&apos;s a song that means SO much to many Hungarians. &nbsp; If you listen to it, I think it will transmit to you some of the essence of Hungarians and their hearts and their cultures. &nbsp; <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b055cHvLgtk">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b055cHvLgtk</a>
