Nordic countries tease and bully each other all the time, but if an outsider comes in and do that to us, we all come together and turn to that outsider.

It's basically like sibling love.

Fun fact: 13th-century English chronicler John of Wallingford complained that Vikings were too hygienic. He noted they bathed every Saturday, combed their hair daily, and changed clothes often. This made them "well-groomed" and attractive to English women, creating envy among native Anglo-Saxon men.

Yes, those are real names. The technology we call Bluetooth today was named after Harald Bluetooth, and the logo his initials in rune letters.

If one had to describe the history of Europe in one word, war would be a very natural choice. Sometimes when you discuss with Americans, you are surprised at how little they know about the history of Europe.

The small nation of Denmark, for example, has a history that is at least 4 times as long as that of the United States. The somewhat larger country Norway has belonged to Denmark for a period of time, but THAT period alone is longer than the entire history of the United States.

Europe's experience with war is why we are reluctant to try to solve all problems with war. There is a very big difference between winning a war and winning a peace. Winning a war can be done in a relatively few years, but a peace often requires several generations to take root. Just look at the tensions that exist between the peoples of the Balkans after a war back in the 90s.
