I am not a professional, but I will make this assessment about narcissism based on my experience with a narcissistic family of origin. Here it goes…, The difference between a person with NPD versus someone who takes a lot of selfies of themselves to post on social media is that the true narcissists will leave a trail of hurt and abused people in their lives and instead of taking any responsibility for obvious wrongs, they will make themselves the victim. And they lie a lot to make others look bad and to build themselves up. Lastly, they lack any real empathy.

Thank you so much for not giving these people a "pass". Always discussing these peoples' traumas and chilhood, intentionally or not, gives them a pass and again shifts the blame to somewhere other than them.

My daughter was born that way. I have been blaming myself for years. Her personality is exactly like her father's. I did the best i could to teach her to be kind and good hearted. I think i just taught her how to "act" to fool people, including me. She left home at 18 and as the years went by we became more distant. She is now 55 and I am 76. We are estranged. I can now face reality, she hates me.

Cluster b personality disorders are rough. Ive dated a bpd and i was married to a covert narcissist and that was hell. I've worked on myself and I've learned not to villanize the person but I now set strong boundaries and stay focused on my emotional and physical health. I do not believe for a second that cluster b personality disorders can be cured.

100% there is a genetic component, it in 5 generations in my family. It's not everyone in the family, the scapegoat (me) will be the none or lest disordered in the family. Salerno is spot on!

My adult child is absolutely a covert narcissist and possibly a sociopath. She exhibits all the same traits ( minus the criminal activity) as her biological father who was diagnosed a sociopath and BPD while we were married. She’s now 28 and my life has been utter hell for decades first with her father then her. I love her so much and tired my best to always love her and keep communication open. I’ve taken her to psychologists. As she got older she refused to go … she’s been lying and manipulating since she was about 7/8. She’s had strange behaviours. I use to sleep with my bedroom door locked fearing she would off me in my sleep. As she became an adult society has done nothing but blame ME. Most people cannot understand the level of pain and despair I’ve lived in trying to help her and yet being blamed for my parenting. Knowing I’ve done my absolute best and always putting her first. I’ve known there is a genetic factor and I’ve been nothing but slammed for that blamed that I’m just trying to pass the blame. This is heavily traumatizing on the good parent ! Society and our world is clinically insane at this point. Dr Salerno is my saviour 🙏🏻 thank you !!

Sharks don’t have a problem . . “They’re sharks! Narcissists don’t have a problem . . “They’re narcissists”!

“Grandiosity and this inability to see others as equal” sums it up for me. It’s got to be genetic- my mother, her brother, my aunt, my brother, my niece. I had a neglectful childhood, mainly food and clothes but no emotion or discussions. So with that environment I could have become narcissistic but my brother seriously did. It’s a sad way to live, I think, as it comes from feeling a great and hidden deficiency deep inside that must always be built up externally. I learned to be the perfect gray rock.

To improve diagnosis, restrict it to PhDs. Restrict nurse practitioner and social workers from having a role in diagnostics and therapy.

Great interview! Love Dr Salerno.
Just some thoughts on 1% of population having the disorder: if they hardly ever go to therapy; then even when they do they lie and and manipulate the therapists who are not equipped to even recognize the disorder how do we know that 1% is accurate.
While the topic has become a buzz word, there are so many survivors who share the exact same story and same experiences . I have a feeling these disorders are more common then just 1 %.
