Have to love this Max Miller (my favorite food historian) as opposed to the schmuck in the news who stole the name Max Miller. Our Max Miller is someone who we love. He's not a schmuck like that other guy. Our Max Miller is a superb food historian.

I came for the history, stayed for the food and hyped it. LOL!!!! Have seen all of these episodes whether when it premiered or off the playlist, but they're so fun, they're worth watching again and hyping.

This episode made me question my reality for a moment as my brain was saying something was wrong instantly....I was like did Max move back to his old place as i have not seen that kitchen in a while 😅. I had to go back to a few days ago episode just to be sure I did not get thrown into a alternate time line.

Apicius' Steak Sauce is pretty much the makeup of A-1 and HP steak sauces.* A-1 uses raisins and oranges in its disfrutum base. HP uses dates and tamarind. Lea and Perrin's has molasses, anchovies, tamarind, chile and cloves in a thinner sauce. They all have salt, vinegar, garlic and onion powder. [*Minus any extinct substances.] Worcestershire sauce is a modern Garum.

59:24 Claudius is my favorite emperor. He was a crippled scholar with a bad stammer. He was intensely shy, bordering on social anxiety. His whole life his family treated him like he was stupid because of his stammer, and EVERYONE underestimated him.

Immediately after the assassination of Caligula, Claudius was found cowering in a side room attempting to not look like he was worth assassinating too. The Senate thought he would be too inexperienced and stupid to have a mind and agenda of his own and so the stammering old cripple was proclaimed emperor…

… and was in the same league as Augustus, Trajan, Marcus Aurelius, and Hadrian.

He was a technocrat emperor and was a zealous reformer. He overhauled everything from the economy to citizenship to the military to the law. He gathered up and publicly burned all the blackmail and documents and forged confessions that had been used by Caligula and Tiberius in the”treason trials” that purged Rome of anyone too rich or well connected or honest.

Claudius pulled Rome back from the brink of civil war.

The story about the golden bowl that went missing and Claudius choosing to overlook it is exactly who he was. He was a kind man, a scholar. He was no temporary warm body the Senate wanted to use as a puppet, but a man of conviction. He was the underdog who never sought or wanted power, and when it was forced upon him, he used it as fairly and wisely as he could.

I wonder sometimes what would have happened if he hadn’t been poisoned and left the throne to Nero when he had. His death and the loss of his prodigious capacity for thought and work might very well be one of those rare moments when everything really did hang on the life of a single person.

thing is, that Law of Justinian didn't stop the man himself from marrying Theodora, an "actress". In fact he changed those laws so he COULD marry her. Incidentally, he fell for her due to her performance in a play about Leda and the swan; no, I will not elaborate as this is a family channel.
