  Weed fabric is the bane of my existence. Not only is it becoming microplastics, it does not suppress weeds. My home has layers of this stuff and every time I find it, it destroys the joy of planting. Removing it is treacherous, hard work.

  Thanks for covering this topic so thoroughly.   I'm glad to know I haven't been making a mistake by not removing old mulch 😊    I appreciate and have learned  so much from your videos.

  I worked as a school nurse. We had rubber mulch on the playground. It has wire in it and kids would get cuts from it! I hate the colored wood mulch too. Besides looking hideous in a landscape you know it’s horrible for your soil. I use pine straw in the SE, cypress or cedar wood mulch or shredded leaves.  However, all can increase risk of fires. When it breaks down though, it’s great for your soil. Just like the woods in nature…rake underneath a tree and look at that rich soil that nature provides.

  Pine bark mulch is also a little more fire resistant and doesn't burn as hot as cedar mulch. We don't mulch with pine straw around the house or against our fence, because   wildfire is a constant danger in our area and pine straw is highly combustible.

  I use weed barrier around beds with only bushes or around trees (not close to the bark). If I just put mulch down, the skunks and raccoons dig all over my beds and make a mess, throwing mulch all over and even digging up plants. So for beds with only bushes or trees, I put compost on top of the dirt, then my irrigation on top of that, then woven weed barrier and finally a thin layer of mulch just to cover the weed barrier. The weed barrier has to be pulled back every year to put down more compost. I discovered the skunks and raccoons leave this alone. Plus, it takes very little mulch to cover the weed barrier. For the flower beds, this year I'm trying just compost without mulch. Everything here is irrigated so I'm anxious to see how that goes. Sure am tired of those skunks and raccoons wreaking havoc on everything.

  I got a chip drop a few weeks ago and I was always under the assumption that you let those sit for six months so it doesn’t cause the nitrogen issue that you talked about. I am so so happy you said something because now I’m totally gonna go shovel it all onto my beds instead of letting it sit.
