This is such a great interview. You can tell when Jonathan Blow talks he has a ton of knowledge and experience in building systems and has spent the majority of his life thinking deeply about systems.

Game development is such an incredibly long, grindy journey. I couldn’t fathom working on the same game for 10 years. It’s so nice to see Jon become visibly lighter as he approaches the finish line. His happiness and smile at the end of the video made my day.

After Braid and The Witness, I'll never doubt this man. Those are two of the most memorable games I've ever played -- they've never left my mind.

I'm loving the Thomas going deeper into the rabbit hole of very long projects and custom engines character arc

Man Jonathan Blow-my-mind is just so good at explaining things, he’s really talented at this although he’s probably a super introverted its his super power

I love Jonathan Blow. For his talents and his faults. I love his ability to make beautifully deep puzzles. Equally, I love his inability to make a one sentence pitch.

When I first started watching I was all "why the hell did it take 10 years?" - at the end it was "ohhhh, all that only took 10 years?". 🤯

This was incredible. As an aspiring solo game dev working on my first project right now, this was so cool. Not just for the preview into the upcoming game, but to see the excitement and passion you both clearly have for game development. If you'll allow me to get philosophical for a moment: How wild is it that humans love games so much they are willing to commit so much energy and intelligence capital towards entertainment? Many of the highest paid careers in ALL societies are entertainers and athletes. Humans love games. And to see two grown, intelligent, passionate adults gushing over "teleportation particle effects" makes me so happy. This is peak existence right here. I only feel sad that there are places in the world that aren't stable enough for everyone to just focus on doing things they love and chasing their passions. Thank you so much to both you and John for sharing and giving this interview.

I don't know this 100 percent but my guess with what Jonathan Blow is explaining about LLMs failing to understand programs vs Thomas's success with Claude is that Thomas is probably doing stuff that has already been done elsewhere many times. I've played the Twisted Tower demo and so have an idea but don't know completely... but it does seem to adhere to a lot of conventions in order to tell a story and create a specific experience built atop those conventions. What Jonathan is explaining is a scenario where very non-conventional systems have been made that an LLM doesn't do a good job with because it is trained on different norms.
