Theismann’s leg break was a compound fracture, meaning the bones were sticking out of the skin. Lawrence Taylor said that he saw blood all over the place and immediately jumped up and waved the medical staff over.

A sack is tackling the QB behind the line of scrimmage when they are trying to find someone to throw the ball to. Detrimental to the offense because it uses a down and results in a loss of yardage, or field progress.

Jim Browne was a truly tough man - when he played in college, and then in the NFL,
There were teams and players who deliberately tried to injure him - and he knew that.

The Theisman hit by Lawrence Taylor was so grusome that they only showed it once, no replays. Theisman's bone was protruding out of his sock!

Here's the thing about Jack Tatum. 1) The hit, by the rules of the day was 100% legal.
2) You cannot blame a player for playing at the 100% level during a game.
He was playing exactly the way he had played in every game before and after that hit.
Was it a tragedy, absolutely, it was.
But that's all it was, a tragic event in a dangerous sport.

It wasn't a dirty shot. There was no penalty, there was no fine.

The best way I have ever heard it explained in simple terms is that Rugby is a contact sport and football is a collision sport. The players experience similar levels of trauma on the body as a car accident and multiple times a game often depending on their position and how involved they were in that particular game. Almost all players are nursing pain and even minor injuries for the bulk of the season, often times the teams that make it far in the playoffs or even the Superbowl come down to how healthy their team is at the end of the season. You have your star player or Quarterback injured, it is difficult to be as successful going forward. Multiple injuries to starters on your offensive line or in the secondary can take a team that is undefeated to not winning many more (or any more) games until those guys are back.

American Football had its roots in Rugby - but it diverged fairly quickly.
It was almost banned as a sport in the early 1900's because too many college players were
actually dying from the injuries they suffered during games.
President "Teddy" Roosevelt directly intervened to have rule changes made to make the sport safer.

Those police officers probably learned to tackle playing football in high school. There are 14,269 high school football teams in the United States with 1,029,588 students playing. My State, Illinois, has 458 high school football teams with 34,630 students playing.
