The part where people disguised themselves as rescuers just to morbidly gawk at a fresh accident really shows that the people who stream accidents online just for the kick of it isn't a new thing; just the same old crappy behavior given way too much instant reach with current telecommunications technology.

Regarding the Laki eruption, I believe scientists are pretty certain the haze also cooled weather enough to stop Africa's monsoon season, which prevented the Nile from gaining the amount of fresh water it normally would (which subsequently leads to flooding and watering of crops), leading to 1/6th of Egypt starving. The famine of India that year that led to millions of deaths is suspected to have been affected from the haze as well. Some Inuits in Alaska had taken to calling it the summer without a sun. The eruption from that relatively small island truly had worldwide ramifications.

People always say that the present time they live in is far worse than the past, then I watch these videos and realize "yeah. I am good where I am"

Crush syndrome is downright horrible to put it lightly.
Imagine being trapped under some debilitating force for hours/days, finally getting back hope for rescue once you’re found, only to lose it all and die in an agony indescribable with any language humanity has invented, and one possibly even worse than the fate that befell them before being saved

The volcanic record wasn't just good for volcanology but archeo/palentology as scientists could id a type of bone cancer specific to volcanic fallout

The thing I truly respect about The Fire Priest and holy people of earlier eras is their dedication to humanity, shown by not only holding prayer sessions during crisis, but by documenting and bearing witness to the aftermath of cataclysmic events. Without that documentation, scientific conclusions made centuries later would not have been possible (ie: effects of low-level exposure to HF acid). Really glad you included this perspective. 12:52
