  This place featured in the Bond film &quot;Skyfall&quot;. I was lucky enough to work on it. What I find incredible is they made a 1:1 scale model of a section of the city on the Pinewood Studios backlot. <br>Even though it was a copy, walking around it was eery. Completely gutted derelict buildings towering over you in really narrow streets, it gave me the creeps. Especially since I was familiar with the story. A proper ghost town. <br>I believe the production team went to Hashima Island in person to get the aerial shots of the island. <br>Good times.

  Mining itself is terrifying and awful enough. Mining with no freedom or training is worse. Mining under an ocean is even worse than all of that.<br><br>What a fascinating island and feat of engineering separate of the events that took place there.

  In Colombia there was a massacre that started like this: a company with all the power over its workers. They tried to make a protest and they were murdered. It happened in 1928 and it&apos;s known as the Bananeras massacre.

  I had a chance to tour there in 2024. It was an incredible experience. Even if you take the boat over, you don&apos;t know if you&apos;re going to land because the crew has to assess the water conditions when you arrive near the dock. The tour is short but very well worth the trip given the history of this place.

  This would be a cool deep dive into the societal ramifications of a company constructing a city, simply based on what’s best for the mine they own underneath it. It’s so contained that the power struggle you mentioned, while terrifying, must be fascinating! It’s like an old psychology experiment. The ones before laws were put in place about how participants had to be treated.
