Britain criticising another country about double standards is rich. 😅

Expat here, been here for over a year and have travelled all over the world. Negative stories drive clicks and headlines more than the positive ones. Wouldn’t say there isn’t a dark side to Thailand because there is, but the actual dark side no one understands until you get here and work here is actually not stated or talked about in the documentary which I find interesting, maybe it doesn’t sell news, it’s all the obvious stuff which they have heavily exaggerated and cherry picked to support their own “dark Thailand” narrative and cultural bias.

Your observations and comments are correct. I am a Brit, married to a Thai and living in Isaan. Thailand resorts such as Pattaya, Phuket and Bangkok are well known internationally for the availability of sex, but these places are not the real Thailand or its culture. It is no different to the dark side of many countries worldwide including the UK.
The BBC had a script they tried to match to a story and present it as investigative journalism, it was not. The editing is their way of distorting truth to suit a biased audience. The BBC does this often especially about politics and can no longer be considered an unbiased news source.

Wow, you've covered some subtle details there! I laughed out loud at your interpretation of "sorry" in the opening scene as "English person has arrived". Spot on 😂

Very well said Jame. You put it so intellegently. Apparently, not many people watch the BBC anyway.

9:37 Born and raised around Hollywood, living in West Hollywood now — I can tell you straight up, reality TV is 100% fake. Everything is storyboarded, they shoot multiple takes, and the final ‘storyline’ is pieced together by producers. Anyone who thinks it’s real is kidding themselves. It’s not a script in the traditional sense, but the cast is pushed and guided into fake drama so people will buy into it.

Your videos are very valuable, informative and honest. Not many Thai people are open to discussing things fairly and openly.

I very pleased that you spent time to do this. I love Thailand and I felt obliged to watch the 3 part documentary and all I saw was a film crew wandering around to try hard to find something they could edit to validate what they were trying to say. You could go to ANY country and find minor issues that if edited correctly would look bad.
Please people do not feel any concern about going to Thailand it is the most amazing place I have been going there every year since 2007 and I still haven't discovered everything Thailand has to offer.

This is the most honest take I’ve seen so far, and it’s refreshing to hear it come from a Thai person.

To be honest, the documentary was mostly to create awareness for not just British tourists but tourists in general. The red light district isn't what us tourists consider the "dark side." It may be for many Thais, but not for many of us; it’s more like great nightlife! What we do consider the "dark side" of Thailand is the fact that just one tiny mistake in Thailand, and you could be facing years in a deadly prison, even if you're 100% "innocent." It's almost as if being innocent doesn't exist for us foreigners. For example, take the British woman who suffers from anxiety and bought medication from a legal "Farmacy," but is currently facing years in prison and has been stuck in Thailand all year, costing her thousands for hotels, literally fighting for her freedom. That's a terrible way to treat a guest. Wheres the "empathy" there?

I'm a Canadian expat who's been living and working here almost 29 years. I have never felt unsafe here or ever had anything dangerous ever happen to me. I'd say it's the same for every expat I know. This documentary was a hyperbolic hit piece and totally misrepresents Thailand. Sure there are sometimes questionable situations here for those unfamiliar with the culture and customs. But more often than not, people run into trouble here because they act as if they're in their home country, or worse, act as if they are above the law. I've lived and worked in 7 countries and traveled to over 50 others. One can get into trouble and/or have negative experiences anywhere if you are reckless and especially if you don't do some due dilligence and learn about the culture and rules of the country you're in.

There are about 20 provinces that are tourist spots, but the rest of the provinces are just places where people live their normal lives. When I went abroad to study, I heard many people talk to me about this topic, but honestly, I had no idea. I’m just from a small town in the north next to Myanmar, and here we have more Myanmar people than Thai. :elbowcough:
