both of my grandfathers fought in WW2, for the german side, and unfortunately one served in the ss. he served on the eastern front however, places like minsk,. briansk, smolensk and sevastopol. both my grandfathers survived the war, which borders on a miracle, since ss men were often shot when captured. he spent 2 years after the war in france, as a prisoner of war, before he was let go and returned home to my grandmother. he was highly decorated during his time in the war, and when i asked him (i was a very young child mind you) where his favorite time in the war was, he said in france. as a prisoner. great video ! thank you!

Imagine meeting a ww2 dunkirk vet and he tells you the RAF abandoned him and you say as someone half thier age “well actually your own eyes and ears lied to you they didn’t abandon you”

IMO The word “miracle” almost hides how catastrophic Dunkirk actually was. Thousands escaped, but the equipment left behind, the troops holding the perimeter and the scale of what Britain had just survived rarely get the same attention. I love exploring that gap between the history everyone remembers and what actually happened on my own channel too. Familiar stories become much more interesting once you look underneath them!!

Both my Grandfathers were at Dunkirk, one was an officer in the Royal Navy taking off soldiers and one as a pilot in the RAF flying "top cover".

Bless those brave folk who went to evacuate allied troops. I always look forward to your videos and learning more about history, keep em coming! Also I for your mentality I hope you’re looking at more than just doom and gloom of history, some more bright and uplifting events.

My great grandad was onboard the Lancastria when it went down. My dad never spoke about it as it was too upsetting for him. Thank you for this video, it gives people insight to what happened to the Lancastria, not many people know about it. ❤

My grandfather was captured holding back the Germans from advancing towards Dunkirk. He was a POW from 1940 to 1945. He saw his friends shot, survived on raw chickens (could never eat chicken when I knew him) and marched through Europe as the war ended weighing just 7 stone.

He was such a kind and quiet man. You would never had known he had experienced such horrors.

Hearing an Englishman use a French accent in utter disdain is a wonderful thing.
