Get our book: https://sleepytimehistory.com What if the first true city didn’t belong to Sumer at all… but to a place the desert tried to erase? In this video we travel to Eridu, an ancient settlement in southern Mesopotamia that later tradition called “the first city.” We explore its Ubaid-period origins, its temple that kept rising above the marshes, and its role in early urban civilization long before Uruk and Ur. Discover how a city built on water shaped the world before Sumer: its marshland economy, its sacred temple to Enki, and its mysterious place in the Sumerian King List and flood traditions. Was Eridu really the city before the Flood? What does archaeology say about Ziusudra, ancient memory, and the origins of kingship? We also look at why Eridu declined, how shifting rivers and power struggles with cities like Ur and Uruk changed everything, and what its burial beneath the desert reveals about how civilizations remember – and forget – their own beginnings. If you’re interested in ancient history, Mesopotamia, early cities, or the real story behind the first civilizations, this episode is for you.
