I love that your video style has basically stayed the same as the past few years.

the frame flexing on the laptop is crazy! especially the keyboard panel, it feels like you are pressing on a bunch of plastic sheets

Man I do this for living every day, keyboard replacements with plastic rivets are such a pain to work with, but you tend to get better at it over time.

Next time working on old laptops you should definitely replace the thermal paste for the cpu and gpu for better temps. Also glass cleaner could rub off the anti reflective coating on the screen, so you should probably not use it.

So I got a broken Lenovo s145 for free. It's a 10th gen i7.

Flashed the BIOS with a bios programmer and got it to working again, replaced the screen with a nice 1080p IPS panel, replaced the battery with a larger one from a different model.

It's awesome, it's my primary laptop and works great.

Now might be the most important time in the brief history of personal computers to put in the time & effort to save these old things from e-waste. The powers that be are intentionally trying to price people out of owning computers so the more we can save, the more options people can have while holding the line and rejecting cloud computing BS.

Trick for the plastic rivets: cut the top of them off from the metal shield flat with exacto knife, then you can replace the keyboard and in the end just put the tip of the soldering iron in the middle of the rivets to form a new cap. Also, open the laptop on the corner of a table and put pressure on the keyboard before melting, so the keyboard is flush and not wobbly.

Great video as always! The computer I'm using now is a 2017 Lenovo Desktop found in Midas Muffler shop trash! All that was wrong with it was an intermittent power switch, which I replaced with a micro switch scrounged from a defunct microwave. Up and running now with Ubuntu 24.04.

It’s a shame that Lenovo doesn’t put as much care into their home-grade laptops as they do for ThinkPads. On my ThinkPad, the keyboard replacement would have only taken 2 screws and probably under 5 minutes

One of the things I always do when obtaining cheap laptops like this - especially 15 inch ones - is to loosen the hinges. The weak plastics are, well, weak and the ridiculous tension from the hinges doesn't help things. Loosening them up reduces the stress the casing gets from closing and opening the lid, and also allows you to open the lid with just one finger without having to hold the base down, like a MacBook.
