  That &quot;solid state&quot; capacitor is a tantalum polymer, or &quot;tant-poly&quot;. The old tantalum capacitors (non-polymer) had a nasty failure case where exposure to voltages above the rated dielectric strength (voltage rating plus about 20%) caused oxygen production and thermal runaway within fissure boundaries in the tantalum, making them short circuit, catch fire, and go off like a firework. The new tantalum polymer dielectric uses a formulation that absorbs oxygen at the fissure boundaries instead of producing it, which prevents the capacitor from turning into a metal fire. However, tantalum polymers do still have the fail-short behaviour when exposed to excessive voltages, so it&apos;s worth being aware that as the other aluminium electrolytic caps on the board begin to age and exhibit greater ESR &amp; impedance you will start to see additional power rail ripple that can lead to failure of that tantalum capacitor through voltage transients. This is one of the reasons that tantalum capacitors (even the polymer ones) have fallen out of favour. You can get aluminium polymer (alupoly) capacitors in the exact same form factor, and they do not exhibit the same short circuit failure mode. They are slightly more expensive, but it&apos;s a negligible cost delta for a one-off mod like this. Panasonic are the main manufacturer for that package type, but their patent expired a year or two ago so there are now a lot of Asian-market manufacturers with comparable products at a lower price (e.g. on LCSC). For the lifetime and cost of this device it probably doesn&apos;t matter all too much, but be aware of it for more expensive or unique devices that you want maximum reliability on.

  Good to see my mod used to clean up the power. There is another mod some people use called the Clean Pro Sound mod that bypasses some resistors on the motherboard but it&apos;s mostly to help clean headphone noise.
