  The ammo stowed being in the turret being only 12 rounds for the Leo vs 35 for the M1 to me is a HUGE deal that people tend to gloss over.

  In the summer of 1984, I was walking down the tarmac at APG when I heard a clank-clank sound behind me. I turned around and saw an M1 creeping up behind me. You couldn&apos;t hear any engine sound from the front which was amazing. I was at APG supporting Bradley testing and was accustomed to the sound of the diesel. Every Army tanker I&apos;ve spoken to love the M1. Thanks for bringing back memories for me.

  I was a young private in 78 and going to school at APG. I remember marching past the shop and getting a chance to see the XM1. Hell we didn’t even know what the name was at that time. I asked my platoon sergeant and he knew nothing about it. I told him I’d love to drive that thing. <br><br>Two weeks before graduation I was woken up at 0330 by my PS. Myself and another private were take to the shops. We were give a short 30 min block of instruction on how to drive the XM1. An hour later we were driving the massive tank. We may not have been the first private to drive it but we were one of the first. <br><br>The next day we return and drove down tank trails to a gun range. There we drove while they fired that main gun. I was hooked for life. At the end of my four year enlistment I re-enlisted as a 19K20 and sent to Fort Knox. I spent 16 years rolling all over the world in my M1. <br><br>I don’t know if it was better than those others but I do know it took us to the Fulda Gap, Fort Irwin, and in 91 it took me to Baghdad and back. So yes I believe we had the best tank ever seen on the battlefield.
