One of my favorite pieces of trivia from this first episode is that the heads up display for the gun that Mal uses to shoot down the Alliance fighter says it's made by the Weyland-Yutani corporation. Which is the corporation that sent Ripley and her fellow crewmembers to die in the Alien franchise.

I still haven’t forgiven whoever decided to pull the plug on this show. To this day, Firefly remains one of the most beloved sci-fi series ever made. Everything about it, the writing, the characters, and that unique 'Space Western' setting, was absolute lightning in a bottle.
