  CORRECTION: At around the 5 minute mark, I incorrectly state that adoption was <b>not</b> common in Rome, this is incorrect. There was a miscommunication within the team when someone relayed that adoption was a &quot;big deal&quot; in Rome and a writer took that to mean it was rarely implemented instead of widely seen. That segment is currently being trimmed out but in case you saw it while it was up, my apologies.

  <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b8AmZ27eitk&amp;t=441">7:21</a> “most people died at 30-40 back then” this is actually a common misconception that i too believed until recently. the reason life expectancy was 30-40 for most of history isn’t because most adults died at 30-40, it’s because those statistics factor in <i>all</i> deaths not just adults, and infant mortality <i>we</i> incredibly high for most of history. lots of babies and kids died but the older you got the more likely you were to live a full life of 60ish years. Obviously advancements in medicine have improved adult life expectancy as well, but it’s really the kids who benefited most

  Nero also tried poisoning her (his first assassination attempt), but since she poisoned her husband she had started practicing mithridatism (consuming small amounts of poison every day to build resistance), because she assumed someone would eventually poison her too, &nbsp;so it didn&apos;t work!

  Small correction- adoption was actually pretty common in elite Roman circles. Augustus was actually the adopted son of Julius Caesar! Blended families were somewhat common because of how small the elite population was, and since becoming widowed was also commonplace, it made sense for elites (especially elite women) to remarry to retain their status. Their children were usually welcomed into the household and COULD be adopted legally as children, and inheritance laws could extend to them if they adoptive parent wished. Pretty neat<br><br>Great video btw! I recently completed my bachelors degree in Roman history, and studied a lot of early Christianity/the historical Jesus. Pretty cool to see a video about this topic!
