  I think the mushroom ending is an analogy to an atomic bomb being dropped on the city, and it makes sense since the FEMA agent said that might happen. And because of the mushroom the protagonist ate, his perception of the world was altered; he imagined he was heading to the land of mushrooms when, in reality, he was fleeing the city... and for that same reason, he sees a mushroom instead of a bomb.

Maybe the things that you did was in fact hysterics from the nuke warnings, people will do anything to live one more day. And when the cloud does fall, what else is their to do but die and drink kombucha
