  When a CEO says "Nobody could have known" it means that they absolutely knew, just ignored it.

  I actually met a lady who lived in Aberfan at the time of the disaster. She was in the same nursing home as my grandfather and she was a miserable bitter old woman. She would shout and claw at people visiting and spit at the nurses. The nurses told us that it wasn't her fault that she was that way because she lost her husband and 3 children during the disaster and just never recovered. She still had nightmares about it decades later. It was just so sad. She's probably long dead now but I still think about her time to time.

  A shocking fact about the compensation paid to the families was that they had to answer questions like how much or did you love your lost children before getting any money paid to them. Hard to believe these heartless questions were asked but it did happen.

  Some of the original footage from the news reporters is horrifying. Not just because of the tragedy but because the reporters kept getting in the way of rescue workers and were literally shoving cameras in front of children who were also attempting to help and asking if they had any siblings or friends currently buried. Like what?!

  We saw this on TV as it happened. I was the same age as these children.  Within 30 minutes my Dad was on his way to Aberfan.  He was never the same afterwards.  So avoidable.  So very sad.

  remember after moving to Aberfan and a neighbour telling me what happened when she was just a kid and losing her friends. the way the families were treated afterwards aswell was shocking.

  Welsh girl here...<br>This WAS absolutely devastating. <br>Corruption and pay-offs from the gas and oil industry, and then, our babies paid. Two of the worst things I can watch, and they usually go hand in hand... <br>We are ALWAYS expendable &nbsp;<br>RIP to those gone and, strength to those still reliving it....💔

  I was born here, in &apos;79. It was a lovely place to grow up but there was a terrible sadness there. One of our next-door neighbours lost their only child in it and they were lovely to us. They and the survivors and the parents of the lost were treated like animals who didn&apos;t care about their children...shocking. Thanks for this!

  At the time, Aberfan lost roufhly 52% of all of its youth in that tragedy. That includes children aged 3-14, leaving a town that had a pleasant balance of ages, mostly inhabited by just adults.

  a terrible disaster that the coal board refused to accept was their fault. handed over to the government who barely covered the burial costs.
