This is a day I will never ever forget when I first saw a mountain of dark coal waste sliding down the hill side through house's and into a school I never knew was there as thr weather that day was miserable with drizzling rain misty and slightly cold .I with my 2 mates turned around and rushed to help as we were one of the first responders . We started to move debris then we were told to go to the chapel and help clean the bodies down so the parents could recognise there loved ones. I was 19 years old a navy training officer who I was trained not to panic but take each minute by minute as the bodies mounted up.not all children's bodies had a mark on them they died under the slurry cutting off there oxygen. I don't know even until this day if it was sweat or tears that was wiping the slurry from the children's lifeless bodies . I can't explain how I felt when I was cleaning the children's life less bodies stretched out on thre chapel phews. My thoughts after many years has never gone away as my soul died with these beautiful children that horrible drizzling nightmare.
