  Natalie Portman won an Oscar for her performance in this. And this film is classed as a psychological horror. This film was nominated for a total of 5 Oscars. What's rare about that is the fact that horror films rarely get multiple oscar nominations so this film did well in that regard

  It’s cool you commented how all the girls in this movie look the same because that’s exactly the point! They’re all reflecting on the different parts of the same person and they’re supposed to blend into each other. God, how I love this movie.

  i think it’s intentional how everyone looks the same, they’re all sort of versions of the same person. and even nina can’t tell if she’s looking at someone else or herself so it makes sense for the audience to not be able to tell easily either

  The ambiguity of who Nina keeps seeing is intentional. Mila Kunis, Natalie Portman and Winona Ryder look vaguely similar to help with this disorienting effect.

  An interesting tidbit about this movie: the director, Darren Aronofsky, tried to create an actual rivalry between Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis to make their performance more believable. After every day of shooting he would text Natalie talking about how good Mila was today, and vice versa. It didn&apos;t work though, since they were friends from before and would just send each other screenshots of his texts and laugh about it... I would say they still knocked it out of the park.<br><br>If you enjoyed this Aronofsky&apos;s other films are worth a shot. Requiem for a Dream is a classic, and Mother! is very controversial but I personally love it.

  This movie was so ahead of it’s time. I remember people HATING this movie when it came out. Psychological horror (and psychology as a whole) wasn’t talked about much so everyone just didn’t get it. I’ve always loved when movies/shows dive deep into how people will destroy themselves mentally and physically to achieve perfection, which in itself is impossible to achieve.

  I remember seeing this in theaters with my dad. We had a flight to catch in a few hours, and were supposed to rush out once it ended. Instead, we sat there in silence until the lights came on after the credits. Such an amazing performance by Natalie Portman

  Fun fact, I actually chose this movie for a psych assignment (3 years ago) concerning schizophrenia and it was pretty fun to rewatch it and notice all the details. <br> <br>Something I really appreciate about the meaningful interactions between the characters is how the main character is slowly falling into a different version of her world, biased by the evident changes (on the outside- from the other characters who point out her strange behavior multiple times) that are transcribed into small details. <br><br>This movie did a great job at letting the main character see an evil version of Lily (her rival) because it fits her narrative in this competition when the real Lily never did any of what the false Lily did (mean behavior, erotic dream, etc….). Despite the evident signs of hallucinations with the “wh*re” message on the mirror, the blood/injuries, and the shadow following her at the beginning of the movie in the street scene, we have other signs that are slightly discreet but evident once you start to notice the changes, which is pretty impressive! <br><br>I can’t tell you all my assignments bc I forgot most of them, but I thought it would be interesting to share the psychological aspect of this movie, thanks for reading if you’ve been through the whole thing and take care of yourself, mental health matters &lt;3<br><br>(If there’s any errors, blame Grammarly for that)

  When this movie came out, my parents were excited to go see a &quot;fun ballet movie.&quot; They went to see it in the theater with my grandmother.

  Every time we see someone else&apos;s face change, it&apos;s her (Nina). She keeps seeing reflections of herself in other people who look similar to her (that one stranger she walked past at the train station when her mom wouldn&apos;t stop calling, and Lily of course). They actually cast Mila Kunis (other than for her performance as the black swan to Nina&apos;s white) bc she and Natalie have a similar build, similar hair colour, etc. I&apos;ve always taken this to mean she doesn&apos;t have the strongest sense of self outside dance, like you noted, so she keeps transposing her own face onto other people; maybe to see how she&apos;d fit? Would she be better/happier if she were more like Lily? That brief moment when she walked past that unknown woman, did she make up a story in her mind of who the stranger was and if her life would be better if it was more like hers? 🤷🏽‍♀️ I&apos;m sure her mom&apos;s controlling &amp; overbearing nature, and refusing to treat her like an adult woman, also doesn&apos;t help bc I always got the sense that her mom was living vicariously through Nina, since her own dreams of being a dancer were thrown away when she got pregnant with Nina.<br><br>Also, justice for my girl Lily! It seemed to me she genuinely wanted to form a friendship with Nina - get her to loosen up, get out of her comfort zone &amp; enjoy herself more - but Nina&apos;s twisted psyche prevented her from being able to see that; she was conpletely consumed by this role. I think the moment at the end where Lily congratulates Nina on her black swan was the confirmation for me that there was no ill will towards Nina, ever. <br><br>If I never hear or see Thomas ever again, it&apos;ll be too soon. Manipulative, controlling, sinister groomer <b>creep</b> 😤<br><br>Also also, you should watch what we fans consider the &quot;brother&quot; film to this one, Whiplash, with Miles Teller &amp; JK Simmons as the tortured artist striving for perfection &amp; hard-ass, brutal mentor. Not a horror but watch in your own time or on Patreon, it&apos;s so very good 🤌🏽

  Fun fact: i was in a psych hospital stay cuz ✨bad thoughts✨ and they played this one night for movie night , for mentally unwell people, many of which who were in there for attempting to unalive themselves &nbsp;😅 i laugh now because how do they not watch the movies before showing them?!
