  My paternal grandfather was a goat herder from north Italy. He died before I knew him. He most likely had these skills. My own woodcraft education came from the Boy Scouts. I had a scoutmaster that was raised on the Cherokee Reservation and learned bushcraft as a matter daily life. He imparted his knowledge as we pursued merit badges. But he teaching went far beyond the scout manual. I completed my Eagle Scout requirements nd went to the n"order of the Arrow" training. Two weeks of classes in a camp setting where we learned survival skills with graduation being two days in the woods with map and compass coordinates that we had to navigate to get back to our original camp site. I took those learned skills and taught them to my two daughters (whom I birthed at home) at a time when the Girl Scouts was teaching them domestic skills and not woodcraft. They have continued the tradition with my two grandsons. I'm 74 now and still do light pack hiking and trail explorations. I live in the mountains of western North Carolina and will most likely end here.

  What I take with me when I go to the woods is a waxed tarp-8x10, 2 wool blankets-army surplus, a sheet of visqueen-8x10. 100 feet of tar impregnated cord, 1 fire starter, 1 block of fat wood, 1 military flashlight , a 6 inch knife with a full tang, a limbing axe, a folding saw, either a bow or a small caliber rifle, food for the estimated stay, 6 inch cast iron skillet Aluminum army canteen with cup and 6 inch aluminum plate, ,  a map and compass, and the clothing on my back. I spread the tarp out, place the 2 blankets and the sheet of visqueen on top. I fold the tarp from the outside to the middle on each side. I then fold it in half, roll it up, tie a strap around it and attach it to the bottom of my pack so that it fall just above my hips. for those who don't know, a limbing axe is smaller and lighter than a felling axe but larger than a hatchet.

  I grew up with these skills learned from a very early age . I do have modern kit as well but prefer and rely more on the knowledge , skills and kit I used as a kid . The knowledge and skills I learned as a kid outweigh the modern kit tenfold and haven't broken and needed replacing in 40 years 😊

  Oil canvas tarp. The can be made out of a painter’s tarp. Generally sold in in the paint department at most hardware and paint stores. Them follow his instructions for water proofing.

  I never had a grandfather or a father who knew this stuff and would teach me. That is part of the problem of today's society. I pray you are able to help many youth learn these skills and the respect that comes with them.
