Does your child with ADHD want friends, but every friendship quickly ends in conflict? Or perhaps they're rejected by the group and increasingly complain that no one likes them? Impulsivity, difficulty regulating emotions, waiting their turn, or interpreting social situations can make it difficult for a child to both make and maintain friendships. In this episode of the podcast "ADHD Without Taboos from a Child Psychologist's Perspective," I discuss how we can truly support a child with ADHD in building relationships. You'll learn, among other things: • why children with ADHD experience conflict and rejection more often, • how to talk to a child after a difficult situation with peers, • what social skills training (TUS) is and what it should look like, • how to practice social skills outside the office, • how emotional impulsivity affects friendships, • how to teach a child to recognize and regulate emotions, • how schools and teachers can support a child with ADHD, • why short meetings with one or two peers can be easier than a large group, • how to protect the self-esteem of a child experiencing rejection. A child with ADHD may desperately need contact with others yet not know how to behave in a specific social situation. Therefore, simply saying "go play" or "don't argue" is usually not enough. Social skills can be practiced through conversation, role-playing, specific strategies, and gradual experience. 💬 Leave a comment: What is your child's biggest challenge with peer relationships right now?
