loved this deeper dive, thank you! This was one of my favourite reads last year and you articulated the essence and beauty of the book so well. Your last point about our identities not absolving us from the need to also learn and strive to understand others, as well as our own prejudices, was so important. Just picked up Cathedrals and excited for it!

So excited for this, I have both Elena Knows and Cathedrals on deck for my next reads

I really loved listening to this deep dive! I read the book last year after you recommended it, and I definitely found the characters enraging and yet the sum of the novel was completely compelling. Your analysis of what we know vs don't know and how Pineiro manipulates the reveal of each piece really speaks to that tension. Looking forward to your future deep dives and will probably try to read each book before watching!

This was my top favorite non-fantasy read of last year. i'm so glad it's getting the attention it deserves. Can't wait to hear your thoughts on Cathedrals

Love your channel and especially enjoy these deep dive videos! Quick feedback: I find the audio from your lav mic a bit difficult to listen to at times, not always (ie a strong p sound), wanted to let you know. Anyways, keep it up and thanks for sharing!

Thanks! I just finished this book, and i really in deep monologue with myself. It's incredible and heartbreacking story. I just found your channel, and I’m absolutely in love with it—the way you talk about books so simply and openly has captivated me. My advice for you as russian reader - Egana Jabbarova — “The Hands of the Women in My Family Were Not Meant for Writing”

I think, also an important point in the book is the aspect that Rita cannot have children of her own, through the book Elena says that she doesn't see her daughter as a woman like her, because she has some kind of ovaries disease (something about her period being extremely late in her teens if I'm not mistaken... I read the book last year so I might be a little off with the details), probably that mixed with being extremely religious leaded to her being obsessed about the "injustice" of abortion, and trying to "save" these women .Adding to that, the fact that Rita and her boyfriend were kinda like "older to be a couple" in the eyes of Elena, probably was an extremely strong factor to the decisions that lead to her ending her life, the aspect of what being a woman is like, of what being a girlfriend or a mother was always so complicated to her -I'm very pro-choice but I became really empathetic with her in this book, her life looked so empty and sad...(but of course, being tied to her mother and her terrible disease that was literally getting worse and worse was the main factor)

-sorry for any misspelled words, English is not my native language, I'm Chilean and I read the book in the original spanish and it's equally extraordinary, I'm glad that the translator did a good job to appeal to the other side of the world as well<3 loved the deep dive analysis that you made, excellent points!

Thanks for the deep-dive. I read this some time ago upon your recommendation in a video, so I don’t remember the details.. In the meantime I’ve also read Cathedrals. What I remember strongly with Rita and Isabella was Rita imposing her moral values upon someone else and the audacity of that. Audacity for me because it assumes a moral superiority (given authority by an institution you cannot question - because how would you do that when the subject matter is immaterial).

What I thought was ironic, if I remember correctly, was that Rita imposed her moral values on Isabella guilt-tripping her into not going through with abortion, which was considered a sin, yet she herself commits suicide, which was/is also considered a sin. She prevents someone from making a choice concerning their own body, when that person doesn’t want to not want to care for another human being. Yet, those rules and that lack of choices don’t apply to her when she doesn’t want to care for another human being. Yes, their circumstances and choices are different but somehow center around the body and what we do with it. Just comparing these two figures is interesting. Abortion is also an interesting and complex topic that seems to be repeated in the 2 books I read, because motherhood has been such an important way to define women. What does it say when a woman rejects one of the operating functions of her body? I can’t answer that.

I feel that Claudia Pineira really looks at how religion affects a society and its people and she questions the institution but also how people live their religion. How deep does it go? Often people like imposing the dogmatic rules of religion and enforcing it on others. Yet these strict enforcers lack compassion and empathy, which I think are at the foundation of the religion. So, what does it say about the institution when these are the people it produces (perhaps questions more related to Cathedral but rears its head here)? I think this author is very brave to tackle these subjects.

With Elena what was impressive was how she described Parkinson’s disease. I felt trapped in her body while reading it. I felt that she was also a part of the discussion surrounding the body. I felt she symbolized not having full agency over your own body. In this case as a result of a disease as opposed to the rules of a society.

This is what I remember. I seem to have misplaced my notes on the book.

Loved this video so much! I loved this book already but you really brought it to life for me. Think I’ll do a reread 📚 excited to see more deep dives, going to read Mrs Dalloway first (on my tbr) before I go in for that one!

This is my favorite book (with The Fifth Season, weirdly for the same reasons), it’s so smartly done and focused and treats the reader as a smart person and doesn’t force you into thinking a specific way, i must reread ❤
