Movies were so much more complex back then.

Nowadays a hero would come up with a couple lines of techno babble and solve the problem with an exciting 20 minute action sequence with lots of CGI.

Late to the party but really enjoyed watching your reaction to this classic 😊. Sincerely, your 69 yr old USA Rock and Rolling classic movie buff

I know I was not the only one who suggested this one, but I am grateful to to see you post a reaction to it so soon. I hope that you really enjoyed the film, and agree with me about how chilling the ending is.

Interesting point...like other movies about nuclear war and weapons, Fail Safe makes the mistake of placing all the functions of ordering and managing a nuclear war together with all of the functions of air defense of North America into one single command post with responsibility for all of those things. That was never really the case, and the command of nuclear weapons and the air defense of North America have never been together in the same place. So the scenario of a computer glitch during an air incursion somehow causing nukes to be launched was not really a possibility, many other scenarios involving computer issues are more possible, but something like this was not very possible at all.

There is a real hotline between Washington DC and Moscow, but it has never been a phone. It started in August of 1963 with a teletype system, then shifted to a secure fax machine, and now it is an encrypted e-mail system.

The Vindicator bombers in the film have far more capabilities than the B-58 Hustler bombers that the US really used. The ones in the film are able to maintain supersonic speeds for far more time than the real bombers, and the real bombers have no other weapons than their nukes and had no air to air weapons to shoot down other planes or missiles that were fired at them.

All the aerial footage was stock footage...some of it was reversed so light was dark and dark was light.

Dan O'Herlihy played Brigadier General Black...the man the President sent to bomb New York...and he has appeared in a lot of films. He played Grig in The Last Starfighter, and he played the CEO of OCP in Robocop and Robocop 2...among many other roles.

One last thing to keep in mind is something I think I may have mentioned in my comments to you on your reaction to Dr Strangelove, but that was a while ago so it is worth reminding you about it. In the early part of the Cold War, and definitely in the early 1960s, the US had a massive superiority in nuclear weapons over the USSR. The US and NATO could wipe out the USSR 100%, but the Soviets could only damage the USA in return...although Europe was always going to be nearly 100 percent destroyed either way.

Excellent! Seen many times, the actors are so good in this, and how timeless it is, so pertinent for today, thanks

George Clooney later produced a live TV adaptation of this starring himself as the bomber pilot and Richard Dreyfuss as the president.

Obviously, we DID learn since this movie is sixty-two years old and we're still here. He just have to keep re-learning the same lessons.

After so many years, watching this film in a theater and the reaction of the people who were with me. How scared, angry and confused they were, they just keep saying it couldn't happen. The one thing is how much it still hurts, my heart was in so much pain, knowing this can and most likely will happen and we can't stop it.

I remember watching this in the theater with my dad. I was 9 years old. No vampires, monsters, or ghosts, but for a little kid I was terrified. I was still so for days afterward.

another excellent film from the underappreciated director Sidney Lumet: 12 Angry Men, Dod Day Afternoon, The Verdict, Network, Murder on the Orient Express, The Pawnbroker, Prince of the City.

Another from this era/genre, fantastic movie with Gregory Peck, Ava Gardner, and Fred Astaire : On the Beach.

I first saw this movie as a young teen and suffered many sleepless nights as well as establishing a lifelong ennui. It was just as frightening when I saw it in my mid twenties. Yours is the first reaction I’ve watched. It chilled me to the bones.

Glad to see this getting seen. I urge reactors to follow-up a watch of "Dr. Strangelove" with this
