It was sort of true. Harper Lee really did grow up in a small town and her father really was a lawyer. The living model for Dill was Truman Capote, Lee's next-door neighbor. I don't know if Lee's father had a case like this, but apparently Lee wrote Atticus to resemble her father. As you say, things like that happened all the time.
Mary Badham (Scout) and Gregory Peck formed a strong bond. They grew to feel like father and daughter. They stayed in touch for the rest of his life, and he always called her Scout and she always called him Atticus. He died in 2003. She's still around, 73, living in Alabama and working as an art restorer.

My favorite book and movie. A relative of mine said this was the movie that really reminded her of living in the south during the depression.

One of my favorite movies, with one of my favorite actors, Gregory Peck in one of his best roles.

Boo Radley was Robert Duvall's first role. You've seen him as Tom Hagen in The Godfather Part 1 and Part 2 and as the veteran astronaut in Deep Impact. I hope you see more films of his along with Gregory Peck who won an Oscar for playing Atticus Finch.

another GREAT, but sadly overlooked, socially conscious film with gregory peck is "gentleman's agreement" (1947). in 1945 he co-starred with ingrid bergman in the hitchcock thriller "spellbound." peck is one of my favorite actors. on screen he carries a sense of inner strength and dignity. mary badham, who played "scout," was in the VERY LAST episode of the original "twilight zone." john megna, who played dill, was in an episode of 60s "star trek." phillip alford, who played jem, never saw him anything but this. frank overton, played the sheriff, played general bogan in 1964's nuclear thriller "fail-safe." there's several familiar faces in this film. i highly recommend the movies listed in this comment. thanks for the video.

This is a beautiful, touching & important movie. The book is even better. The story is about unfairly judging people & how society tries to pigeonhole people & entire groups. So glad you watched it & you should also read the book. On that note I’m going to leave this here since I noticed that you called Mrs. Dubois an “old Karen”.

A message from Karen D. Cooke:

I really don’t understand why my name that was lovingly given to me by my parents 66 years ago is being used to describe horrible women. I also agree that no names should be used in this way as it is very hurtful.
I think nothing is as personal as one's name. Can you imagine waking up every day as an adult having to think "I hope no one bullies me today. I hope the customer service person doesn't sneer at me when I give my name. Can you imagine being accused of racism or self-centeredness, just because you try to stand up to those bullying you? Can you imagine feeling forced to change your name as some women named Karen have done?
Here are some of the things I and others named Karen have lost:
Our sense of belonging
Our sense of anonymity
Our sense of normality
Our sense of safety
The presumption of good character (including from children)
Our ability to read books, watch movies or TV, use the internet or listen to the radio safely without risk of bumping into insults, derision and even death threats regarding our name.
What started out as a joke has become seriously hurtful and it has gone on for too long. It is time to leave Karen alone.

I wish we had to read this book when I was in school, that would be one assignment I would have been eager to do. I saw this movie at the drive-in with my parents when I was way too young to be watching it. I didn't understand the story line of Tom Robinson, but Boo Radley gave me nightmares for a long time. When I saw it on TV when I was a bit older I understood what the movie was really about and it's been one of my favorites ever since.
