I'm a board certified sports medicine physician. Regarding Luc van Loon's study on animal vs plant protein, not only is plant protein inferior to animal protein for human health, but there's also much less protein per gram in plant sources, and the plant protein is less bioavailable due to the fiber. To wit, 6 oz chicken breast contains 52 g protein and 281 calories. 1 cup of quinoa contains 8 g protein and 222 cal. Therefore you'd have to eat 6.5 CUPS of quinoa (1443 cal) to get the same amount of protein! Now factor in the newer recommendations for 0.75 - 1.0 gram of protein per pound of ideal body weight per day, and you can see that it's almost impossible to get the ideal amount of daily quality protein from plant sources without consuming an obscene amount of calories.

It's great to hear this right just after my workout at the gym 💪😃
I've just turned 57 and I'm muscular as I've never been before!
I love to break old fashion beliefs such as "at a certain age there is nothing you can do, especially if you are a lady you can't help having belly fat"
Many "friends" used to tell me this and it motivated me to become the best version of myself, inside and outside.
Now they say "I'm lucky".....
It's not a matter of luck it's a matter of willpower

Personally I always get a lot out of your lectures. I’m a 69 year old with a history of osteopenia and sarcopenia. I’ve seemed to have reversed it by walking the talk after removal of a rogue adrenal tumor. I can feel it in my bones. lol. Your lectures clarify the path to wellness very well. The surgeon in Tampa that removed it says that 10% of hypertension is Conn’s Syndrome. I was never diagnosed with it but I seem to have fit that pattern. These days I’m realizing we have to get old but we don’t have to get frail. Just want to say thanks for the guidance.

Alas, we who went through menopause 15 + years ago were steered AWAY from HRT. Actually, the only menopause-speak I ever got from an MD was "you can't be in menopause, you are too young" (early 40s). ZERO words about menopause other than that.

As a geriatric P.T., I always appreciate your brilliant insights and passion for conveying concepts to a broad audience, particularly as it pertains to sarcopenia and metabolic health in general. I learn so much each time I tune in!

At my peak of strength as a male, at 27 I could bench press my body wt. 185 pounds 3 x 10 no problem. Now at 58, I weigh 167 pounds but I can bench press 175 pounds 3 x 8. I take creatine and do low carb.

I got out of the marines in 2003 and have been doing the "marine corps workout" daily since. Push-ups, pull-ups, walking. I noticed if i stop doing them for a week or longer, then it feels impossible to restart exercising. If i only take one or two rest days a week, then they always are easy.

This is an excellent video on battling anabolic resistance! You've highlighted the critical importance of resistance training, high-quality protein intake (especially leucine-rich animal proteins for older adults), and key supplements like creatine, vitamin D3, omega-3s, and HMB. Addressing insulin sensitivity is also a crucial point.

However, a key nutrient often overlooked in such discussions is magnesium. While not mentioned, it's vital because it's essential for energy production (ATP synthesis), directly involved in protein synthesis, supports proper muscle function, influences anabolic hormones like testosterone and insulin, and offers anti-inflammatory benefits. Its omission is notable given its fundamental role in muscle health and growth processes.

I have found that adding casein protein towards the end of the day, helps to counteract the catabolic impact of the overnight fast. This is reported to be the case due to the slow digestion of casein vs whey. Some people drink a casein shake just before sleep. However, I find that this negatively impacts my sleep so I have breakfast and lunch and then around 5 or so, I drink a casein shake with no other ingredients. This works for me.

I am also, at 72, through twice weekly injections, raised my testosterone to youthful levels. I would say that keeping testosterone high is more important than anything else in terms of building and retaining muscle.
