On one Johnny Carson episode he had Orson Wells on, then the next guest was Robert Blake. Blake made a snide remark about Orson’s weight… he said “ You make Whimpy look skimpy”, there was some uncomfortable laughter, then Orson put his hand on Blake’s arm and said “Well I can diet but you’ll always be ugly”. Pure genius.

Dick Cavett was a great interviewer. He showed a genuine interest in his guests and let them talk. No ego.

Anyone under, oh, forty, watching this is probably amazed at the leisurely pace. Everything today is said at double the speed and, one might argue, half the substance.

Orson Welles made a brilliant talk show guest, but I also like that Cavett let him speak without interrupting, without inserting himself in any way. And his questions were thoughtful ones.

With his hairstyle, weight, and black shirt, Orson Welles looks like someone you could bump into here in the 2020s. Once you start listening to his stories it is hard to stop. Very articulate and interesting.

That Upper Crust Tansatlantic accent was very soothing to listen to. It really disappeared after the 1970s when that generation started dying off.

I love Orson Welles — but also think that Dick Cavett was the best talk show host ever. He had such an ease and listened. Really listened. It all seems to be simply a conversation we’re eavesdropping on.
