  PTSD has always existed and was called &quot;blood guilt&quot; in ancient Rome, &quot;soldiers heart&quot; in the American civil war, &quot;shell shock&quot; in the world wars, among constant other phrases.

  I wish PTSD was better portrayed in modern media. The &quot;flashbacks&quot; for me are extremely rare, I&apos;ve only ever had it happen twice. What does happen is all of the &quot;danger&quot; sensors in my brain fire at once and I scan everything that I can see. I was trained to keep my head on a swivel, so I do that and check everything and everyone to look for threats. When I see that there are no threats, though, that doesn&apos;t stop the danger sense from firing, so I check it all again, and again, and again. Then I try avoidance / isolation, move somewhere else or somewhere familiar. Find cover or get back to somewhere I know is safe. Rarely is it &quot;I&apos;m back in the streets of Iraq&quot; it&apos;s much more common to feel &quot;there&apos;s sights on me, someone is aiming at me&quot; and I react accordingly, even if that isn’t the case.

  The first PTSD-like symptoms were described by Herodotus in 440 BCE, he described an Athenian soldier having what we would know as a thousand-yard stare after witnessing his friend being killed in battle

  I am a psychotherapist and licensed professional counselor. The medieval practices of treating moral wounds through confession and exorcism, and worldwide spiritual practices in general, are the forerunners of psychotherapy today. Excellent video.

  In Czech language (or maybe more Slavic languages) we don’t say“mental health” but “soul health” and I think that makes sense

  I am a Croatian war veteran (from the 90s), broken in body and spirit. The only things that bring me joy in life are teaching young people how to live for themselves and equally for others, and the wind of oblivion that blows through my head and heart on my motorcycle, because you can&apos;t ride and think about anything else but riding.

  A friend of mine, who has suffered an anomalously shocking life, once described traume to me as &quot;having something you deeply believed to be true shown to be absolutely false&quot;. Which explained why childhood trauma of any scale sticks in our minds so much.<br><br>I think about that a lot.

  I’m a social worker who works with refugees, which was my dream in college. One of my classmates was a sailor with a medical discharge who wanted to work with fellow vets. We did a practicum project together on PTSD because of the overlap in our preferred clientele. In researching for that project, we found that Greek plays also described PTSD among Ancient Greek war veterans. Really interesting stuff - the “1000 Yard Stare” has been observed across cultures and millennia.
