  I am 74, my wife is 73. My daughter who is 47 lives with us and has a severe substance abuse problem. She has been going through this from the time she was 15. Nothing we try seems to help. Our old age and family has been shattered. Pray that it never happens to you because it is hell.

  One of the reasons I stopped teaching is because parents refuse to see the truth about their children. Never holding them accountable, defending their horrible behavior or just plain out denying it even exists. They want to blame everyone but themselves or the child. Sad to see that it never changes even when they grow up like in this case.

  When you have a child with mental health problems that never seem to get better, you can feel so helpless. Everybody has advice, but nothing seems to work for long. The awful truth begins to dawn on you:  you cannot control the situation, yet you are consistantly called on to "help." You want to help; you grasp at straws; you set boundaries, but you are afraid. What will happen to your child if you stop helping? What will happen to you if you don't? It's a damn nightmare.

  16 years sober this month. I manipulated EVERYONE around me & finally had to explain to my parents to stop helping me, because I needed to hit rock bottom for myself & finally it happened. You can't do for others what they're unwilling to do for themselves. Bless Rob & Michele for trying so hard, & may they rest peacefully.

  I follow a lot of true crime I'm not sure if I can think of anything worse than being murdered by your child,  being stabbed to death and having your throats slashed by the baby you once rocked to sleep? Unconscionable.
