  My niece was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder in her teens.  She was hospitalized but when the benefits ran out, my brother took her home.  They had her on a 24/7 suicide watch at home since she had voices that told her to kill herself.  My brother admits that they were afraid of her at times.  He and his wife made sure one of them was with her at all times.  This went on for over a year until they got her meds stabilized.  She went on to graduate college and is self supporting now.  Fortunately, substances were never involved.  You can't imagine the burden this disease places on parents who truly love their child.

  Without regard for the convoluted history surrounding Nick Reiner&apos;s mental health and drug abuse, one thing is painfully clear. He is a danger to the public and himself, and he is decidedly resistant to therapy. He doesn&apos;t want to &quot; get better &quot;, revealed by his lack of positive adaptation to clinical interventions. <br>His parents made the bizarre decision to ridicule those who attempted to intervene in Nick&apos;s disturbing behavior, and it cost them dearly.

  Today is the first anniversary of my brothers death.<br>A heroin/drug abuser who was paranoid schizophrenic. There is no dealing with these people, you just manage as best you can, they are chaotic and unpredictable.<br>My brother died in his sleep, which is as good an outcome as we could hope for, he is at peace now.<br>I am sorry for anyone, especially parents, who have to deal with this. <br>There is no winning, just minimising the losing.

  I have been an RN for 50 years. I was a psych nurse 40 years ago. It amazes me how little progress has been made in psychology.
