How One Stage Completely Ruins Mega Man 2

    FAQ:

Q: "The stage isn't bad, you're just bad at it."
A: That isn't a question. But I'm not actually bad at this stage anymore. I still think it sucks even if you're good at it, which isn't something I'd usually say for Mega Man at its best. I viewed the stage under the perspective of a new player because that's the most common and important perspective to consider.

Q: "What about [other problem with Mega Man 2]?"
A: I don't think Quick Man's stage is poorly designed, I don't necessarily mind that Metal Blade is over powered because you can choose to not use it, and while Heat Man's vanishing block section is really hard and kind of unfair, it's not really worth going into detail about in my opinion. Opinions will naturally vary but I think the other issues with Mega Man 2 are footnotes compared to Wily 4 and the game would be almost perfect without it (or if it was redesigned).

Q: "Why does the footage look like that?"
A: I'm mostly for blame for this. I started my editing project at the wrong framerate and only noticed after editing all of the audio and beginning to add the video. Unless I was missing something, I couldn't change the project framerate directly, so I ended up going with it despite hating how it made the game look. You will still encounter sprite flicker if you play Mega Man 2, but this was mostly alieviated by CRT's being able to blur frames together better than newer displays.

Q: "Mega Man 3? Really?"
A: Yes.

I'm willing to hear out criticism because I'm still finding my footing and learning how to write about games tactfully, especially when forming criticism about them. Thank you for leaving any comments, even if you didn't agree with my points or delivery, not because of some arbitrary algorithm boost but because it helps me to improve.

Without watching, I can bet it's going to be the Purple stage with the BooBeam boss.

Boobeam such a badly constructed boss it genuinely looks like the game is crying for mercy just to keep itself running while all the parts are on screen

Funny how Kitamura apologized for the BooBeam Trap, saying basically he was having a really bad time when he made that, which implies trolling everyone was his coping mechanism.

the fact that a number of folk here thought 'exploit the walls not respawning between attempts' was the best solution just proves how bad this fight is.

It's the kind of level design you'd expect to see in a ROM hack that can get away with trolling players who can probably abuse savestates anyway.

I like how everybody in the comments collectively just went
"It's BooBeam isn't it? it's gonna be BooBeam"
"There it is..."

That boss single-handedly makes me not replay Mega Man 2 as much lol

For me, there's an even more fundamental flaw with Wily 4 that wasn't mentioned here: The aftermath

In every other Mega Man game, even in the Wily stages, there is always a small opportunity to replenish your weapons without a Game Over. Mega Man 2 is the only game that breaks this rule, as you are immediately sent to the Teleport Room for the boss rematches & Wily's first fight, then immediately to the Wily rematch. Once you reach the BooBeam room, there are absolutely no more weapon capsules to restock any weapon, especially the weapon you just got done draining, the Crash Bomb. And taking the 2-life approach to the Boobeams doesn't eliminate this flaw, as the most you can possibly have is two shots going forward. Such a restriction never happens in any other Mega Man game.

This stage has a great child hood memory of mine. I remember I kept running out of crash ammo on this stage and it was driving me crazy, mind you I'm about 6 years old when I was playing this game. Then one night I had a dream of this boss room and in the dream I figured out the order of how to do it with the crash ammo. When I woke up, I immediately started playing the game, and beat the stage. At 42 years old, I have still never forgotten this level, and how I was able to beat it. Great times.

The craziest part is that they could have solved the ammo soft lock issue by just having respawning enemies like they love putting in every other level.
