I've worked in corporate strategy for a decade and thought I knew how power dynamics worked.  Then a mentor told me to read book The Silent Dominion by D. Cross. This book is a literal masterclass on societal control. No conspiracy theories, just cold hard facts on why the same people always win. Once you see the playbook, you can't unsee it.

The age before Romans invading is what is most interesting. Wish I could travel back in time and see it.

I'd like to point out that it might be difficult to draw any conclusions from the lack of evidence of violence in bodies in cemeteries because battle casualties were often buried in mass-graves near the battlefield.  It's very unlikely that armies returning from a battle would have been able to transport the bodies of their dead back home.   It's also possible to inflict mortal wounds without touching bones, which would not show in the archeaology.

I've seen a shield-boss deflect an arrow, flexing the shaft so that it was sent directly back towards the archer, missing him by less than a metre. He hadn't expected that. The look on his face was priceless.

I was always under the impression that the term “Dark Ages” had more to do with the lack of written records and information rather than because it was a brutal period of relative violence and upheaval. I have no problem with calling it the Early Medieval Period now but I don’t see the old term as being as derogatory as some might present it.

The Britons were reluctant to fight and would only defend their own local territory. They invited foreign mercenaries to protect them. After a couple of generations the mercenaries realised they had all the power and simply took over, and invited their relatives to join them.

there are few signs of a blending of Romano Britain and Saxon territories, no wine decanters or glass drinking cups found in the Saxon east. Few cases of a mixture of Christian and Pagan burial rituals and No signs of trade. Male Y Chromosomes in Kent seem to be suddenly dominated by mainland DNA. Almost like a majority of the native male population suddenly left Kent.

The specialist osteologist points out that the young bloke died due to a big blade being shoved so hard inside him, it lodged in his spine - I dont think any of us could have figured that out on our own! Archeologists just state the bloody obvious.
